HCG diet: Is it safe and effective? - MayoClinic.com

From the information I have read (from doctors... not people trying to sell the product), the weight loss comes from the severe caloric restriction, NOT the hcg. So you don't even need to waste money on the hcg drops or injections.

The hcg diet is only supposed to be used for 3 weeks, and usually is accompanied by supervision from a medical professional.

I would stop doing this diet. You have been doing it for longer than the recommended time, and I am very concerned about the side effects. No one knows the long term side effects.

What kind of recipes could possibly be involved in a 500 calorie a day diet?!?!

Celery Delight: 1/4 stalk of celery, 1 cup water. Yummers!!

Cucumber Delight: 2 paper thin slices cucumber, 1 cup water. Enjoy!

[QUOTE=meg_alane;7051790]The Hcg diet is a good way to screw up you metabolism for a long time. Of course you're not seeing results anymore. Your body has gone into starvation mode and is not burning calories and/or fat as efficiently as it would if you would eat properly and work out.

500 calories!? I think I burn 500 calories in my sleep!

There is no "secret" to weight loss, and you don't need a salesperson!
Healthy food, portion control, and exercise.[/

I really wouldn't do this, must be so bad for you.

THis is a sample of what I found:
Breakfast: Coffee or tea with artificial sweetener and one tablespoon of milk. Lunch is 100 grams of lean meat, poultry or fish in addition to one low-glycemic vegetable like spinach, celery, cucumbers or cabbage. One Melba toast and one fruit like half of a grapefruit or an apple is also allowed.
Dinner is the same as lunch.

ETA: I'm failing to see where the daily recommended servings of fruits and veggies comes into play. Sounds like you're getting 1/4 of what you're supposed to get.

OP, Do you know what HcG is? How much research did you do on this before you decided it was a good choice?

Please be careful with this diet. Your body NEEDS a certain amount of calories in order to function... depriving yourself is not healthy.

Perhaps you can talk to a dietician or nutritionist who can help get you all set up with the food part?

I see a dietician in my surgeon's office (I had weight loss surgery last year).... and she would beat me if I told her I was eating less than 1200 calories.

I know it's exciting to see results... just make sure you're taking good care of yourself.

Thats what I'm saying. I don't have any research to back it up, but with long term use of synthetic hcg, I would be concerned about adverse effects. Whenever products of conception (cells from a pregnancy) remain in the uterus and continue to produce hcg while not supporting a pregnancy, there is a risk of choriocarcinoma. IMO, I would be quite concerned that using synthetic hcg would carry the same risk.
