    White Elephant

    Advertisements
Would you be willing to bring something to have a White Elephant exchange?

Info on a white elephant for those you don't know:
Bring something weird that you already have but it is almost completely useless or just really weird.
The items will be cataloged, numbered, and then the numbers put in a hat or something
People pick numbers from a hat, your number = your prize.

There are other variations out there, the most notable being picking numbers for ranking order, rather than prizes, first person picks the prize and the second person can either get the first person's prize or pick their own. Only issue I see with this is the size of the thing, which is why I'm getting info on how many people would participate.

I'm not too familiar with it, so if I have anything wrong please tell me. And if anyone wants to post a better explanation please do and I'll put it in this OP.

YOU MUST BRING A GIFT TO PARTICIPATE - generally it is not something that you bought specifically for this, but something around the house that you don't want.

I'm just gonna go ahead a be a downer and say that if I can even come that will be a financial miracle, so no... I probably wouldn't participate. I might if I COULD, but I can't. ( I didn't vote )

I know it's a year from now..... but my debt isn't gonna be gone in a year so for ME just going would be a stretch in itself.

I think it's a good idea to keep costs to an absolute minimum. I think just making it there will be difficult enough for a lot of people, so I'm going to say I probably wouldn't participate. I know that's negative nancy but I think there will be enough to do that this won't be necessary.

The whole point of it is so that you bring something that you want to get rid of (ie. Already own) so you don't spend money. At least to my understanding.

My mom does one every year and she just gets these random things around the house to bring in.

Ohhh.... the white elephant things I've done, have always been like secret santa where you buy a gift for x amount (usually like $25-$50).

If it were free and optional, that would be really cool though!

Definitely free and optional! Everything is optional! Nothing is "forced".

Just a "everyone brings a useless item from home and you pick from a hat to see which useless item you leave with, but this item has sentimental value" type of thing.

Some will, some won't. It's not like we'll require 50 people to bring stuff. It can be fun with 5-200.
