We got married 3 weeks before he left for his deployment but did not get married because of the fact that he was geting deployed. We were planning it and did a destination wedding/vacation and it was a great way to spend time together before he left. i think it depends on the individual circumstance but I would not recommend getting married because he is leaving. I would advise against the JOP and then the formal wedding...when would you celebrate your anniversary?

DF and I were engaged before he left for Iraq, and decided that waiting to get married until he returned would be best for us. He never felt less reassured about my commitment to him because we weren't married, and it was definitely the right move on our part. You don't have to be married to be committed.
On the other hand, my friend married her husband right before he was stationed in Korea for a year, and it worked out great for them. They, too, had planned on getting married anyway though. It all depends on your relationship, but honestly, I would never recommend getting married JUST because you want to make him feel better. If you were already planning on getting married, go for it if it will make you happiest. Good luck with whatever you decide! |
