I worked for Delta Air Lines for 2 years! It depends on a lot of things. It depends on the fare you have and who you booked it through. If you didn't book it directly w/ the airline you may not be able to change it at all. Some outside companies like Cheap Tickets and that won't allow changes whatsoever so your ticket becomes an expensive bookmark. Delta's policy is a $50 change fee plus any difference in fare. If you have already flown out and are changing your return then it'll probably be cheaper then if you are changing the whole thing. What happens when you change your outbound is that they reprice the ticket for the current day fares. So it doesn't matter that you may have bought it a month ago if that flight is almost sold out you are looking at paying anywhere from $300-$1,000. If you are just changing your return and you have already flown the outbound then you could just be looking at the change fee if the same class of service that you bought it in is available. I hope this didn't overwhelm you and that it helped you. Whatever you decide I would call the airline asap. The longer you wait to better chance you are going to pay a lot more money to change it!
