Question about flying for PCS - Travel, Leisure & Vacations

Sheesh after almost 13 years of doing this you'd think I'd know the answer

BUT...We've NEVER flown to a new duty station. We've always drove. Course that was before having kids. We moved here while I was 9 weeks preg with our first and will be moving with 2 kiddos from here

Anyhoo...I know we have to pay to ship our vehicle and thats fine. But how far in advance does my hubby need to put in we're flying so we can get our tickets?

They won't pay for your plane tickets, except going O-Conus. I think it stinks, but it's their way of saving money.

are you serious?? So in order for them to pay for you to move basically you gotta drive?? Oy! Thats gonna suck

Why don't you drive from IL to CA?
That way you can stop when you want, take as long as you want, and not pay to ship your vehicle, and see the country on your way.

Yes, it is going to stink. GL to San Diego, is a long ways! We had to drive with 2 little ones from Orlando (Nuke A/Power School used to be there) to Idaho Falls, Idaho (prototype) and it was miserable!!

We've seen the country already

We've driven to every dutystation we have had (CA, DC, IL, VA, WA, and back to IL now) We were trying to avoid driving with a 2 and a half year old and a 4 month old....thats a long time to stick my kiddos in the car like that and the having to stop every few hours, and I want to hurry and get there and get settled so I can get my kids back into a routine

Wow you've done a lot of driving.
We've done NC to CA twice - interesting we always drive the same direction - lol.

When we've flown it's been on orders so plane tickets and car shipping is paid for, sorry.

We have orders

But from what Jo is saying they dont pay for flying except when you go o-conus and I knew they didnt pay for car shipping..Oh well. No way can we afford plane tickets, car shipping and a hotel out there. Blah this is gonna bite
