Traveling with animals

I was wondering if anyone knew about traveling with animals on airplanes. How is it for cats? Has anyone traveled with a cat?

You can look up the different airline restrictions for flying with pets. Unfortunately, my cat is too large to fit in the airline-regulated carrier. I ended up driving 1800 miles with him. He did really well. Only meowed for an hour and hid under a blanket in the backseat the rest of the way (we stopped for the night twice too).

Our girl cat has flown from Germany to NC then from NC to England and she did great both times. She has quite a large kennel for her size (we like he to have plenty of room) and because of that she flies in the climate controlled cargo area. Plus, we don't want to bring her in the cabin just in case someone near us if allergic.

Animals usually have to be at the airport quite a few hours before the flight because the Airline wants to make sure it has something to eat, drink and had a chance to go to the bathroom. When we PCS'd from NC to England, we flew from Fayetteville to Charlotte and then from Charlotte to England, Kitty was on the same flight to England but she was on a much earlier flight to Charlotte. When she arrived in Charlotte someone from the airline called us and told us that she made it there safely and was very happy and playful. When we got to Charlotte someone from the airline came and found us at the gate to tell us again how happy Kitty was.
