Camping Trip

So DH and I have never been camping together and are trying to plan a trip sometime soon. We are thinking of labor day weekend right now, but may push it back a bit depending on finances and what we decide on.

We won't be purchasing a tent. We have PT cruiser and what has worked well for us on our cross country drives is to just pop out the back seats and we have a spare futon mattress that fits well in the back. Then, we cover it with a comforter for extra cushion and we're pretty comfy.

Here's my question - what do you do when you're camping? We'll have my dog with us so unless we buy a backpack for him to ride in, biking is kind of out, and that was our biggest suggestion of what to do. DH is not into fishing at all...

So tell me what you do when you're camping please! Oh, and if you have any suggestions on where to go, that'd be cool too. We are outside Omaha, NE and were thinking Northern Colorado somewhere perhaps.

Southern MO would be cool, too. There's a lot of canoeing/floating down there, which would give you some activities as well.

As for what to do... Hike in the mornings. Drive around and see historical sites in the area.

We like to walk around and sit and talk a lot. and read. We also explore the nearby towns. The last time we went camping alone we were near baraboo wisconsin so we checked out all the neat local stores.. we found an awesome celtic store.

sure, it is leaving the woods... but we love to find all sorts of new things to do and we love to sleep in tents... besides, camping is the cheapest way to experience a new town. if you look hard enough, there are free sites with maybe a wood or water charge only... much better than an expensive room... or a gross one!

Can we float or canoe with a dog? Sounds like fun... except I think a dog might complicate things.

Good ideas! Normally DH doesn't like that kind of thing, but he really had a good time when we stopped in Jackson Hole, Wyoming... hmm.... maybe I can find something similar, just closer to here.

I always think of a bonfire and music when I think of camping. Might be impractical, depending on your location.

Oh, you can totally float with a dog. He'll love it -- he just hangs out in the canoe with you. Maybe get a doggie life vest if he's not the best swimmer!

I've actually never seen him swim!!
