A few questions about vacationing - Travel, Leisure & Vacations

DH and I are planning our first trip while he's home on R&R. We're young so we've never done this before. Forgive my stupid questions.

We're thinking of going to Kauai
1. How much spending money would you take with you?
2. Would you rent a car or take a cab?

I'm sure I will think of other questions but I'm just trying to save enough money for everything. Thanks!

I'd stay the cabins at Barking Sands.

I wouldn't carry too much cash. Maybe carry traveler's checks too, or just use your debit cards too.

I probably would rent a car, because having to use a taxi adds up....

I haven't been to Kauai but I have been to Maui and Oahu... As far as money I would take just one or two hundred dollars in cash (some in small bills for tips) and then use plastic the rest of the time. As far as a car, I would say rent. I can't remember where I heard this but supposedly there are more rental cars in Hawaii than POVs!

When we went to Kauai when I was in Hawaii we actually found a cheaper rate to stay in a hotel. There was a bunch of us though, but it may be worth calling around or going online to see the rates. We got a rental car, which is probably a better idea in case you like to hike/explore like us. We drove around a bit, and it was nice to not be paying a Taxi fee the whole time. I'd bring 100-200 cash for little things here and there, but at your hotel and bigger places, you can use plastic. Its really not that much different than a normal vaca, its jsut more remote and secluded. Its VERY peaceful though and INCREDIBLY beautiful! Make sure to bring a camera!!

Oh, and if you are planning to hike there is a trail on the east side of the island (if I remember correctly) where they filmed the initial scene in Jurrasic Park when it shows them flying in past a waterfall. Absolutely gorgeous!

Has anyone stayed at the Coral Reef Hotel? I was thinking of booking a room there. I hear it's really nice and inexpensive.
