*tears*
*more or less a vent, but any advice will be appreciated*
So, Aiden (9) was Dx with dyslexia this past July. Significantly Dyslexic is what the Dr told me. I wasn't surprised, I had suspected it since he was in Kindergarden and well, it's still pretty normal to do the reversals up through 1st grade. He's in 3rd now (repeated 1st) and well, it's getting harder to deal with. Here is his list of spelling words this week. slept February them never when many sent kept September best friend then cents Wednesday guess better When they took the practice test, all of them were wrong. Each and every one. Now, we will work on them all week and when he takes the test at school...most, if not all, are wrong. I just don't even know how to handle this! He has such a hard time remembering what letters even look like...as well as numbers. I have to constantly tell him what (IE) 12 looks like. "Its a 1 and a 2 side by side". "b goes this way, d goes that way". *sigh* His spelling is totally phonetic. You can make out what he is writing, because you just sound it out and voila'! We are in week 7 and my heart broke for him on Monday. He said, "I get them ALL wrong!!!"...in tears. He already is so super hard on himself and calls himself "stupid" and "dumb". I keep telling him that he is very smart...hell, you have to be in order to memorize all the words he has just to "keep up" with everyone (most of the words he reads he has turned into sight words and memorized them). He was also rated borderline gifted when the GATE testing was done in 2nd grade. I just don't know how to make him feel like he is smart. I keep telling him over and over. Ugh. I'm going to talk to the teacher about the spelling issue. At this point, I just don't know what to do. I wonder if he will give him credit for the fact that he's spelling them phonetically?? Maybe that will help him feel better? I just don't know. Any ideas??

I agree with the questions above. How are you practicing with him at home? Maybe you could talk to the teacher or school counselor about how to approach the problem at home. Does he get any extra help from the teacher?

He's taken out of the class 2 hours a week and he gets one on one from an aid 2 hours as well.
For practice, repetition. Slept s-l-e-p-t, s-l-e-p-t that sort of thing. He has spelling homework pretty much almost every day as well.

Have you tried talking to the teacher/Dr. about getting Aiden an IEP? My brother is dyslexia and he has had one all of his life. He gets extra time to work his work, and other things like that. I can talk to my mom about how to get one and everything like that if you need that information
![]() You should talk to Aiden's teacher about maybe cutting back the amount of words he has to remember each week. Have you informed the teacher about it? If the teacher knows and isn't trying to help him/being understanding then you need ![]() Just remember to breath and to take it slowly with him.

He should be getting special help at school and have an IEP if he doesn't have one insist on one...My dh is dyslexic and when he was younger it was really bad but he went to a school that had a special program and it helped him tremendously....I
that the school steps up and helps him bc he will be an amazing adult regaurdless...Also find his strength and focus on it and how well he's doing...My dh became really good at math and clung to that and it helped him to feel "smarter" bc number were something that didn't bother him...

I would definitely go to the teacher about it. I mean because I'd be practicing with him the same way you are at home. Maybe the teacher can come up with something?!
