Questions about getting a IEP
HI i have custody of 4 yr old and he has behavior issues, ptsd, and adhd. He was abused and thats why he was taken from his mom(my cousin). He is going to PK4 yr old program and they have already gaven him one day of OSS and i am having a parent teacher conferance tomorrow and i want to see about getting a IEP. I am not sure excatly what a iep is or what do i need to ask them.

Have you requested him to be tested yet? Is his PK through your local school? If not, you can go to Special Ed. office for your local school district and request that he be tested. Was he ever referred to your local infant/toddler program when he was younger? Was he exposed in the womb?

An IEP basically states what the child's problem areas are, what the goals for that child are, and what services are given and how often. IEP's transfer from state to state so if you get one where you live now, then you move to another state, the new state accepts it. The new state will adapt it to their criteria but the old is accepted and followed.
To get one you need to have him tested. How to go about that can differ. In IL. my ODS was referred to the special education district of our county from his private speech therapist. They tested him and was given the IEP. My DD was evaluated through the school when she was in Kindergarten. To find out I would start by calling your home school. That is where kids in your area go to public elementary school. They should be able to tell you how to go about it. Good Luck.

Good luck with this. I know it can be frustrating to deal with a school district while caring for a special needs child. I'd like to say that the frustration will end once he gets his IEP, but unfortunately that is rarely the case. Be vigilant. Be strong. Stand up for the child's needs when no one else will.

Thank you I went to school gave them the dr dx on him and they are going to start the testing for the IEP but until then we are setting up a meeting and getting him in the section 504 program so he can go ahead and get services until we get the other done.
