Testing for Learning Disability

Well, ODS' ISP meeting at school is this Wednesday. Anyone have any tips or recommendations to help convince the school to test for a LD?

she has an ISP and hasnt been tested?

you might need to fight for it! my mom fought for 4yrs before they tested me and found out i had a LD

Be prepared with any documentation you may have already..... The child's teachers comments or recommendations for testing and why (if you dont have this, might be a good idea to try and get something like this), any past testing that may have been done, take some time to write out the reasons why you think the test should be done (just as a reminder for you)...

The ISP is like a Individual Student Study Team where we are meeting with the principal, his teachers, the nurse and the school psychologist and are there determining what needs to be done. In Cali, they need to see 2 yrs of "failure" before they test for a LD. Once he's tested, then we'll be able to get him an IEP, which he really needs.

Thx. I'm going in armed with his latest grade level testing that was done (which he failed) as well as a note from our Dr urging testing. The developmental ped wants to wait until we find out what the school will do before he pursues other options. ODS also has an appt with Peds Neuro on May 20th so hopefully we can get something from that too. I just want the school to do SOMETHING. I love his school and teachers, don't get me wrong, I just wish Cali's standards didnt require that we allow them to fail before finding out what the problem is. If it's something that could have been corrected earlier on and I held him back when he just might not have needed to be... KWIM?

Know exactly what you mean... I dont understand why states have the requirements for testing like they do, just doesn't make sense to me at all... The note from the Dr. should prove useful, and if his teachers believe he should be then that should help push the choice to test as well...

His teacher is all in I think,so we might be golden!

ya every yr here in VA we had to do the big meeting and go over my progress or weak points. and see where to go from there then my mom would need to resign the paperwork, then every 6yrs id go threw the major test. the LD test, which i always thought was fun. in 4th grade they found out i was doing 9th grade math. made me feel smart.

I would call my mom and ask her what all she did but shes at work right now.

Yeah, ODS is so far behind but according to the gifted program testing, he's borderline...so we need to figure out why this kid who can't read close to grade level is almost gifted. Once we find out why he can't read where he should, and get that corrected, I'm sure he's gonna sail through.

How big is the gap b/w his expected and his performance on the test? It seems to me that if the difference is 2 grade levels (he's behind by that much), that can also be used (as opposed to 2 failures) to indicate testing.

(But it's been a long while since I took those classes.) I do think if the teacher is advocating for testing, you've got an in.
