Small prayers please
Well DS got his IEP on Thursday and we all have decided to put him in a special class to help his academics and his social skills. He will also be going to speech and language 2 days a week for 30 minutes. Also he will still be with his regular kindergarten class for centers. His new classroom only has 6 kids in there so it will be alot less distracting for him. I cant list all the goals they have in his IEP since I dont have the copies yet, but if you can just send some small prayers that he adjusts okay. He did seem happy to go to school today though. We told him yesterday about the new classroom though. Hopefully he wont have to be there to long and they can get him back into the mainstream classroom. I doubt it will be this year though.

He is definitely going to need them since I just got an email back from his regular teacher that he was not happy about going to the other classroom and she said that he finally walked down there to the new classroom and her assistant checked on him and he was sitting by the door with his coat and backpack still on.
Bless his little heart. I just hope he isnt going to be mad at me and not want to go to school tomorrow. |

Gabe does the seperate small class for math, reading and language arts. He LOVES it. He has been doing that for 2 years now. I am sure he will be fine. In the smaller classes they are able to do more "fun" things with learning vs the traditional class size. Makes learning fun for them again.

with my son, anything new throws him into tantrums. We try to explain what is going to happen and then use a positive rewards system to help him adjust. For example, we recently switched his toothpaste from his toddler (non-flouride) to crest kids. He FLIPPED because it is blue and tastes different. I made him a chart that we could put stars on each day he used the "big kid" tooth paste without me having to SIT on him to get the job done. We let him know that the reward was a trip to the zoo (his obsession is animals). We also give stars for good behavior at school... maybe something like this would help your son adjust knowing that he was working toward a goal that he really liked... ~Amy

thats a good idea and I will have to run that by his teacher and my DH and maybe his teacher can do something at school and we can do something at home. but at least we can do something at home even if the teacher cant.

Small update
Thanks for the prayers ladies. I just have a small update, after yesterday when Robbie wasnt happy in his new class today is much different, he still isnt happy about it but from what his new teacher told me today he actually came with her to the class more willingly and he did his work all by himself which was math I think. she also said he has been talking to one of her more verbal students and she thinks a friendship is starting. She also said he was talking to her and after circle time when she read them a book she said Robbie was telling her about the animals from the pictures. So at least its a step in the right direction. I just think yesterday was a complete shock to him. His regular teacher and her assitant have been peeking in on him every now and then and they both said today is better but his regular teacher said she wouldnt call him being happy. I cant wait to ask him about his day today. see if he says he had a good day or not.
