I just got a letter from the school psychologist about my son Aiden. I'm going to type it out as written.
Dear Parent of Aiden K, Aiden was administered the Raven Progressive Matrcies Test as part of the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) identification process. Date Tested Feb 3,2009 Raven Progressive Matrices percentile score: 90.0 Score needed for cluster identification: 98th percentile After testing, Aiden did not meet the criteria to be identified for the GATE Program. however, your child may be eligible for GATE Cluster placement into the class by the school site on a space available basis if your child meets one of the following criteria: 90-97th percentile on the Raven OR One score of Advanced in either English Language Arts or Math on the California Standards Tesst The rest is not relevent... Are they telling me that my child whom I'm pushing to have tested for a Learning Disability is borderline gifted??????? I'm so confused right now. I'm waiting for a call back from the school psychologist so I can try to understand...we are at a total loss here. It's not that I won't be happy to hear that my son is borderline gifted, I just have no idea why school is so hard for him and why he seems so far behind on day to day things. Again, I'm at a loss. Any imput?? TIA~

it is the way he is learning and remembering it- he can test very high, but still struggle with every day things- or it could be that all this time he has been bored and has not been applying himself.
I would talk to the school and see what they think.

Its very possible for him to score high on those tests, but still struggle with school... It really has a lot to do with the way they tested him, how they worded questions, what kind of activities he had to do during the tests....
I was (well still am, but have learned to deal) Learning disabled and I scored well on those kinds of tests but really struggled in school... Schools are more focused on remembering facts and memorizing things for standardized tests and things like GATE are less about facts and more about learning abilities and stuff like that... Haha did that make any sense?

I just asked Vic about the GATE testing he said it was soooo easy, he said all you have to do is solve puzzles and you said Aiden was good at those I'm just trying to help make some sence in all this. When we got the letter I called the number in the letter and had to talk to the guy himself about it because I couldn't believe my son who takes 2-3 hours to do his homework was able to get into GATE.

My brother was in all the gifted programs but struggled a ton in school because it was easy for him and ADD didn't help. Maybe its the organized part he has trouble with and is really just a genius?? You should have someone look at him.
How old is he? PS I love the name Aiden and want to name one of my boys that one day
