T's Too Skinny
So, Tristan recently started taking Concerta. It has really been a blessing. It was a really hard decision for me, but it has worked out great for him, and for us. He is so much more calm, he has fewer meltdowns, and seems less anxious in general. His teachers have expressed multiple times that he needs so much less redirection in class. He has gotten "green" at school almost every single day since he started it. Green, Yellow, Red is a stop-light sort of method for tracking the kids' behavior.
Okay, now the only issue we are having is he has lost weight. It is very common with this drug. I looked at him as he was getting in the bath the other night, and he is very skinny. I can his hip bones poking out, as well as his ribs. So, my question is this: I have asked that he eat a second breakfast at school. He eats before school, and I've been making big breakfasts for him(sausage, pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, eggs, peanut butter toast). I thought eating a second breakfast may help. He has also been eating 2 dinners at home. I sit and spoon feed him when I have to, to make sure he is getting enough. What else can I do? Does anyone have any ideas? He has his follow-up for the medication next week, but until then, I don't want him to lose anymore weight. I think this is affecting his metabolism as well as his appetite. I haven't noticed him putting any weight back on, even with all of the meals. Okay, if you made it this far, any suggestions? |

He takes his pill with breakfast, so he eats breakfast here well. His teachers are also keeping an eye on how much he eats there for "second breakfast"* and lunch. *Okay, so I'm picturing Lord of the Rings, where one of them says, "no one told him about second breakfast."

I thought of the same thing! I was very underweight when I was a kid - I more than made up for it later in life! Don't worry too much just yet

We are being lazy. That is about the extent of our plans. |

I don't know why this works, but whenever my son takes a multivitamin it really boosts his appetite. And I know this works for several of my friends children too. He does the generic gummy vitamins. I can definitely tell a difference when he takes them. It's worth a try!
