I am kinda sad
As some of you all know we have been trying to get our DS tested to find out for sure if he has aspergers/autism spectrum and adhd and any sensory issues and get his IQ scores too. well he is cooperating with the therpist as far as the IQ testing goes. So she had to give us questionaires to fill out and one for his teacher too. She said she should be able to get a diagnosis based on those but the only part she wouldnt be able to get is his IQ so I asked his teacher if she could ask if the school can do that if he even cooperates.
Do any of you that have kids with the aspergers/autism spectrum have or had any problems getting them to cooperate with the testing? His therapist also thinks he has some defiance issues too just from him not cooperating and doing what she needs him to do. this is very frustrating. also I feel bad for my DS because he is missing out on alot of funs things that most kids would jump at the chance to do. Like singing songs with the kids in the classroom, sitting on santas lap, etc.... stuff like that. My heart breaks for him that he doesnt like participating in really fun stuff and I am just wondering if its due to his sensory issues or his disorder. I am hoping that after we get these questionaires done that we will have a diagnosis by next week. |

I can only really comment on the missing out on the fun stuff, but here is my 2 cents on that. Those are things that are traditionally fun for kids, they aren't the things that Robbie is going to find super cool, you know? Tristan wouldn't sit on Santa's lap for all the money in the world. He cries when we sing happy birthday, but he LOVES the Wii, and he loves reading, and he loves sitting around drinking hot chocolate with us. He may not love to do the things some other kids love, but he still LOVES the things he loves. Does that make sense? He's still able to be happy, it is just on his terms, and his terms are a little different than other kids'. I know how you are feeling right now. It is a rough road, and it takes some serious adjustment.
He'll get the point where he'll take the tests. I just know it.

oh that helps more than you know. You are right but I still wish he would find some other things fun. But then I guess alot of kids that have aspergers prefer to play alone rather than with other kids. |

![]() My son wouldn't cooperate too well with his first round of testing. Being sad about the things he can't/won't participate in like other kids is normal. I have one pic of my son with santa. That's when he was a baby. Try not dwell on those things and focus on the stuff he will do.

I'm a school psychologist so I can answer questions about IQ testing. How old is your son? Is he verbal? If if they can't get him to do all the testing, it may be possible to at least get a nonverbal IQ score. Some autistic children are not able to do the nonverbal testing, but many are.
