I don't know anything about sign language, but I'm thinking maybe we should start learning at least some basic signs just in case Auri can not hear like the doctors think. Does anyone know where I can find maybe teaching computer programs or DVDs that can help me, my husband, and our 3 year old learn some signs so that we can teach them to Auriana? I know it could be helpful even if it turns out she can hear because maybe we could communicate with her sooner. I know children who have down syndrome tend to speak later than typical children anyway so maybe teaching her some signs could help anyway. Has anyone else taught their child (special needs or not) American Sign Language signs? Where do you find material to learn them yourself? I found some websites online but they tend to be pricey... I don't have a fortune to spend. Thanks

I took classes at our local community college. It was only about $100 a semester. I found it VERY fun and I learned a lot.

I agree with the public library. When josh was still non-verbal at 2 1/2 we picked up on ASL and the library had a copy that they let me borrow for a while!

If your child has a hearing loss and Down Syndrome, she should be eligible for speech therapy through early intervention. They will teach you signs as well as determine if there are other ways for her to communicate as she gets older.

I took ASL in HS. Even though both my kids could hear fine I tought them some basic signs. Its good to bridge the communication gap when their minds know what they want but their mouths can't say it yet.
I agree with looking at the library. |
