My sister's friends have a child with severe Down's, and he is unable to hear very well and thus has not picked up on many words. They found a program (although i'm not sure if it is only for special needs children or not) that teaches the child and the parents ASL, and it has worked wonderfully for them. I would ask the hospital if there is a type of program that you may be eligible for.

I work with special needs children at church and we use ASL with some of the ones that are not very verbal yet.
I agree with checking the public library and it is also very helpful to know ASL as well. My friend's brother taught me some ASL that one of the volunteers didn't know the sign for (the word was crackers ) since he is half deaf and he's willing to teach me more just for me to know. ![]() Hope it helps! |

My sister is in school to become and interpreter. There are classes at local community colleges.(and if you can't get someone to watch her, there are usually daycares on campus). Also, if you like to learn yourself, books and DVD are great too. Look around and see if there are any Deaf Churches in your area and attend one. Getting out and signing with other people really help you learn faster. Try looking up Deaf Associations where you live and see if someone can help you. Goodluck!

I have a degree in Special/Deaf ed as well as a DS nephew. You can google to get info but also Borders or most books stores have TONS of stuff
There are also lots of baby sign classes in most areas. Even if she has good hearing she will benefit from learning sign as most DS babies have speech/processing delays. If you have any questions...just ask ![]() http://www.aslpro.com/ http://www.needsoutreach.org/Pages/sl.html http://deafness.about.com/cs/signfea...abysigning.htm http://www.lifeprint.com/asl101/page...t/concepts.htm |
