Neurological problem linked to behavioral issues?
Ok so while we were at my son's behavioral specialist today, he told me that he was wondering if maybe his behavior problems might be linked to some sort of neurological issue. He's putting in a referral with tricare to get him tested. Has anyone had this be the case with there child?
A little back history on him...sorry this is gonna get long. Doug is 7, he's been delayed his whole life, mainly in speech, fine motor skills, and cognitive...which he's actually on track for now...and he's very close to being on track with everything else too. When he was around 2 1/2 or 3 the behavior problems started, around that time my husband got stationed in Korea, so I honestly thought it was just linked to that (and the age of course). I figured as he got older he would start to out grow it...he hasnt. He was also recently diagnosed with ADD, and we started meds for it this past June. Most of the time he's a happy, gentle, considerate boy. But then there are times where he has these terrible fits. He gets violent (rarely with people, more with objects...throwing things, tearing up paper ect) and it's almost like it blacks out when he has these episodes. Two weeks ago when we were at the behavioral specialist he was having a rough day, and his therapist and I both provoked him on purpose. I know that may sound horrible to some, but his therapist needed to see him at his worst in order to be able to treat him. I have NEVER seen him react the way he did. I had heard about it from the school but never seen it first hand....he's never been that way at home. And honestly it scared the hell out of me. I was trying to get him to sit down next to me and stay still, and he got this look of utter panic on his face, stared straight at the wall, went rigid and just yelled and screamed. It was awful. Now the puzzling part, is when he comes out of these "episodes" and calms down, he has NO memory what so ever of the fit or the time leading up to it. He cant understand why he's in trouble or what everyone is talking about. But it's like he's this yelling screaming child one second, and the next he's all smiles and telling you about his Pokemon cards. I'm lost on what to do, and anytime anyone says "possible neurological problems" to a mother it automatically makes her freak out. So yeah I was just wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this before.

I am having behavior issues with Gabe that are beginning to show up at school now. In the past it was always at home. Has your son had a neuropsych test done? I am in the process of getting a referral for that for Gabe. The school is backing me on it too with Tricare.
I hope that you guys are able to figure out what is going on with him so that you can get it fixed. I know these episodes cant be the best feeling in the world with him either. |

As I was reading your post i was thinking "that kinda sounds like my son"..Andrew was Dx this summer with ADHD and ODD and we go every two weeks to Psycare for his med check and Thearpy to help him control his feelings and i learn how to deal with Andrew when he is destroying things or hurting others. Andrew is improving in the classroom and has improved a great deal at home. Best of luck to you

Hi - just wanted to give you a ((hug)) and say that you will make it through this and so will he. I have an 11yo ds that was similar to yours. We went through some neurotherapy as well as just seeing the psychologist regularly. I do know a little about what you're going through. You're not alone. Hang in there!
