Moms of kids with ADHD
Do any of you ladies have problems getting your kids to take their ADHD meds? I am having the darndest time getting Robbie to take his meds. Its a big power struggle in the morning and he fights me tooth and nail. He takes adderall XR and I open up the capsule and sprinkle it on some chocolate pudding since I dont think he would swallow the capsule. I just dont understand why he doesnt want to take it. He takes it better for my hubby than he does for me and now that my hubby has to get up alot earlier than he used to and get to work earlier I have to be the one to give it to him.
I talked with the counselor we are seeing about it today, she gave me some good suggestions so I will at least try that. Its very frustrating. I know he needs them too. I will also be talking to our MD about her switching him to a different med either in a chewable grape tablet or a liquid or either the patch. I am just frustrated right now. |

oh I know. he threw the spoon of choc pudding on the kitchen floor today so I just said forget it I dont have time to be fighting him on this because he only had like 45 minutes before he had to go catch the bus. I just hope he wasnt really bad at school today. I havent gotten an email from his teacher or a phone call so I guess thats a good thing?

Well our counselor told me to try a reward system using a treasure box and have him pick out the stuff from the dollar store to put in the box and then tell him when he takes his meds he can get something out of the box but if he doesnt then the box gets closed until tomorrow and he goes to school without his meds. I will have to inform his teacher what we are doing too.
I just hope that works at least until we can get his meds changed. |

My son is very self-aware of his issues and behaviors when not on medication, so it hasn't been an issue for us. The patch may be a good alternative. Does he say why he doesn't want to take the medication? Is he experiencing an unpleasant side effect, maybe?

ITA, get the patch for him since taking the pill is an issue. DD takes hers on her own, but she's almost 11 and can keep track of that...altho' I DO ask her if she took it...esp if she is way too hyper!! lol

well Robbie is almost 6 so I know having him give it to himself is out of the question. LOL
But when I ask him why he doesnt want to take it, he doesnt answer me. I dont think its because of a side effect that I know of. If it is he isnt telling me what it is. |

I was on ADD meds from the time i was in 3rd grade till I took myself off of them my senior year.
I can tell you one reason why he might now what to take it. It changes the kind. For me my pill made me a different person. My friends didn't like me as much as they did when i was off the pill. It changes your appitate too. I don't know how your son feels or anything, but thats just how it was for me. At one point my pill started to cause me to go into depression and i lost 20 pounds in two weeks cause i just kind of stopped eating much. ADD pills suck. it's just plain and simply. I tried all kinds of them and not one was good for me. (yeah i got better grades and concentrated but when you can't be you, it sucks.) hope maybe this helps a little. sorry he's being difficult. I use to pretend to take my pill and fllush it down the tolet. |

well the thing is if he is being disruptive or disrupts his classmates how can he learn if he cant keep still. His teacher today did email me and tell me that he finally completed his independant work but only because she gave him less than the rest of the class. She said she was going to do that tomorrow too, but she said he wouldnt sit on the carpet but that he was laying down and he wouldnt say the pledge. Now I would never force a child to say the pledge but I would make him stand out of respect. He doesnt even know the pledge or how to say it I dont think.
