Saw the dev pedi!
So we saw her this morning for about an hour and half. We see her again Friday afternoon and thats when she will tell me everything she has found out. However she DID say that I was 100% correct that he has severe allergies and not just environment/seasonal. She said just keep trying to eliminate all casein but not to worry about gluten yet (one step at a time).
She said that his ears while not infected do not look great inside (which is another sign of food allergies) she thinks his hearing may be slightly muffled because of this. The loading up on carbs that he does and very little protein is another sign of food allergies, along with she thinks chewing is hard for him so it is another reason he prefers things like watermelon and bread to chicken and carrots. She also said that his pediatrician was wrong when she brushed off my request for allergy testing, and that it can very well explain why he gets so sick (fall-spring) because his immune system can't fight off cold/flu bugs very well since it is constantly battling allergens. She is going to give me something official for his pediatrician on Friday so that I can get him allergy tested. She said that he refuses to do skills that he lacks the coordination for (stacking blocks, colouring, etc) it is hard for him, he gets frustrated and either gives up right away or just says no. (which is what happens in OT ALL the time) She seemed to really like Jacob and had nothing but smiles for him. He let her touch him, look in his ears, and in his mouth with almost NO problem. I have NEVER seen him not freak out when they do that BUT she approached him so differently then any other pedi he has ever seen. She spoke in a whisper and moved very slowly while examining his body. She asked me to bring my Mom on Friday so that she can keep him busy while the DR talks with me. She said she has a ton of things to talk with me about and that I need little to no distraction. I am so relieved to know at least ONE of the things that is going on with Jacob though! I will update again on Friday! I am wondering how I am going to handle his diet WITH daycare I may have to look into getting a nanny BUT then he misses out on social interaction. Unless I sign him up for something like Gymboree a couple times a week. I am trying to not worry about that until Friday after that I will know what I need to do as far as daycare/my still going to school etc.

Tristan has severe allergies too. I wonder if it is a coincidence. I took him to an allergist in WA, but here they don't think they are severe enough to warrant it.
Anyway, I'm so glad you got a good DD. That is challenging as you may very well know. |

Hi, I read your post... this website looked really helpful. I have a little experience working with families on the GF/CF diet. It's quite the commitment and can be costly, but the one's who have seen a difference have seen BIG changes in their kids. Good luck at your appointment-- I hope you get some clear cut answers.

Wow, it sounds like you hit the jackpot with that ped! I am so glad you have someone who can be an advocate for him like that, and even happier that Jacob likes her.
You have your hands so full, I can't imagine doing everything by myself with all the added complications of allergies and extra appointments to keep along with school. You're one tough momma.

The allergy thing makes me very nervous casein free is VERY hard to do. It is also not cheap to boot. (they sneak that casein into just about everything even things which say DAIRY free) My Mom and I were just talking about how to make his food without it being bland. We were brainstorming something as simple as a potato LOL. I told her I was looking for a casein free butter substitue and it was really hard I only found one. So then she was like what if we just give him a baked potato w/ sour cream and then she started laughing and said DURH that is dairy LOL. so we are thinking roasted potatos with olive oil and herbs.
When we go places I just have to bring things for him so he can eat, and birthday cake will be interesting I can't buy him any fun store bought cakes so I better learn how to decorate. At least they sell a casein free icing & cake mixes at wild oats. I talked to the daycare and they said yes I can bring him his snacks and meals but it all has to be prepared they can't even heat things up for him if I bring it from home. So that is what we will do I will get him a lunch box and a food thermos for hot things. I will have to remember when it is other kids birthdays because parents bring in treats (cupcakes, cookies things like that) so I won't want him to go without KWIM.
