Can anyone point me toward some resources for someone in Temecula, CA whose child has NOT started talking (incl mama, dada, etc just babbling unintelligibly) by the age of three? She will be three in July, actually.
The current guardian is NOT military so if you have resources that are NOT military affiliated that would be MUCH appreciated! I'm not even sure where to start looking. ![]()

I found this on Delayed Speech in Children but nothing in Temecula.
http://www.education.com/reference/a...elayed_Speech/ Would probably have to go to San Diego, that's where the majority of them are.

San Diego Regional Center. They might not help her b/c of her area, but they can help her find her local regional center.
http://www.sdrc.org/ ETA: They should get her seen by her doc ASAP to refer her to special services too if their insurance offers any... |

Once the child turns three, the mother can self-refer to the special education dept of the school district. http://www.tvusd.k12.ca.us/ That is the school district website, there is a link titled district contacts, and there is a phone number for the special education dept. If the mother tells the district there is a concern, they are required to evaluate the child. Of course, since it is near the end of the school year, it may not happen until Sept.
There is also California Children's Services, they offer therapy services for children. However, if the child has no "diagnosis" it may be more difficult to get the child seen. Social workers are available through CCS, and I'm sure she could help point them in the right direction as well. http://www.dhcs.ca.gov/services/ccs/...tyoffices.aspx That is a link so she can see what office is closest to her. http://www.dhcs.ca.gov/services/ccs/Pages/default.aspx That link is a basic program overview. I would enourage her to contact them even if she feels her child won't qualify from the basic info page. Let it be their decision! Both of these programs probably will take some time, though. The school district, Regional Center, and CCS, all have to set up evaluations within a certain time fram, but they are govt organizations, so they get quite a bit of time. I don't know what insurance the child has, but most insurances will pay for initial evaluations from a Speech Therapist. It is the therapy itself they don't want to pay for! The mother can try going through her insurance company as well, but the programs that have already been mentioned aren't going to cost anything, while insurance proabably will. Hope that helps some!

No problem. I have been there/done that with the CA services. They do go to the school district though at age 3, but that takes a few months of time to set up, so she might want to hit up the local school to see what is available and get the ball rolling, especially before summer school is out.

If the child is on Medical, it should be really easy to get her into these other state programs. She probably could have been receiving it already. Good luck with the adoption process, I'm sure it is long and frustrating!
