Question for you who see a developmental ped.
Do you have a hard time getting an appointment? Even return appointments? We were Tricared out of the military hospital here because the one there is so overloaded. Well, the civilian seems just as overloaded. It took me over a month and a half to get the inital appointment. Then we waited just over a month to return for a IQ test and what I thought would also be an an appointment with the DR.. All they did yesterday was the IQ test and scheduled me for a return appointment to go over all the results and they can't get me in until July 2. Seems so freaking crazy!! I was just wondering if any of you had to deal with waiting long periods of getting to see a development ped??

I think that is about typical for developmental doctors. The one my daughter sees takes several months to get in to. That is pretty much the case with any peds specialist, unless they are new and just beginning their practice. Sorry you have to wait so long to discuss the results, waiting is hard!

Yes. The wait times for everything out here is months... I make his appointments 6 months in advance... it is very aggravating and disheartening, especially considering how important time is.
I would ask if you make appointments in a row at one time... that's what we do, just continually make them as far out as the schedule will allow. I feel your pain though!!

yes. Sean was sent out of Tripler to see his developmental pediatrician. It took about 3 weeks for them to get back with me and then it took almost 2 months to get in to SEE the developmental ped.
Now he sees a psychiatrist every 4 months.......but his psychiatrist is easy to get an appointment with. I have switched Sean to a pediatrician that was listed on the DAN website and she's hard to get into as well, but worth it IMO.

Thanks! At least I know now that I'm not the only one having these issues. I just wanted to get things discussed and squared away hopefully before school starts again in late August. That way if there are any issues, I need to deal with the school about, hopefully we can square all that away in the beginning of school.
Guessing if one is wanting to be a doctor........maybe dev. peds is the field to go into. From the looks of it, there must not be enough of them. |

My son was seen once. I live in Southeastern CT. To see one, I would have to go to Yale, southwestern part of the state. Very long wait list, we're talking years. The one in Providence Rhode Island, won't see him because they changed it to ages birth - 3 years old since tricare wasn't paying them, even though they have a contract. There used to be 3 Dev. Peds there that took tricare, now it's one.

We made our first appointment with the developmental peds and it was made for late October but I had them put us on a cancellation list and we got called and seen this past Monday and I have a return appointment for July 31...so It was hard to get that initial appointment but so far to get a return doesn't seem too bad...but we shall see

Well, after talking with my son's OT therapist, I figured out the dr. that Tricare referred us to is not even dev. ped., he is a neurlogist/sleep specialist. However, I'm told he is qualified to render a diagnosis for Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders. Apparently there only a couple dev. peds in the San Antonio area. They are booked up until sometime in late 2009. So, I guess I will stick with what I have for the moment and see where it goes with this doctor.
