Orleck Heights is down the street from me. I live in Santo Terrace... it's all a part of Murphy Canyon. The drive to work wouldn't be too bad... it's about a 30 minute drive. DH works downtown but frequents Pt Loma often for surveying.

But MC does have some pretty nice houses & good sized yards. I have 2 dogs & it's enough space for them & my son (if he were old enough to play outside). And there's a lot of kids over here. There is a bit of crime though. The kids like to pour crap in gas tanks, start fires & sell drugs at the park... it's a mess in certain areas. And you have to watch out for Coyotes. But honestly, I've never had any issues & I really do love living here.

Hi, we were stationed in San Diego twice, resulting in a combined total of 6 and 1/2 years there. I did not live in Chollas Heights either time, but I can tell you I was not impressed with the area it was in nor were the schools that impressive. I did however spend my last three years in San Diego (we left April of 2012) in Santo Terrace, which is part of the Murphy Canyon housing area (as is Orleck). I have several friends who do live in Orleck and have no major complaints. The part of San Diego that Murpy Canyon is in, known as Tierrasanta, is a nice area of the city. Lower crime, better schools, small town/family oriented feel. There is a Vons, Albertsons, Walmart, several fast food places, Mini-NEX all within 5 to 10 minutes of housing. The schools are close by as well. I opted to send my kids outside of housing for school; they attended another elementary school within Tierrasanta which was 10 minutes from the house. The homes are decent size in Orleck and all of the Murphy Canyon homes come with some sort of a yard, but the sizes can vary significantly. Orleck has parks within the neighborhood, pool, and a media center in the management office for residents to use. Tierrasanta area also has AYSO soccer, little league, girls softball league, Pop Warner, dance, gymnastics, and many other kids or family activities. The area has parades throughout the year and little festivals at the community center. If we were to ever get PCSed back to San Diego, we'd be requesting housing in Murphy Canyon. Good luck with the house hunting and the move.

"What's so good about good-bye? It is good to be reminded that life is brief, at best, with no dress rehearsals, and the seasons we are privileged to share together are even more fleeting. Good-bye is good if it teaches us to cherish the life and breath, strength and sound mind, and the moments we are allowed to walk side by side with a friend. Good-bye is good if, in that difficult moment, we stand still long enough to give thanks to God for the lessons we've learned together, the love given, and the love received, recognizing that these are gifts from the hand of God." ~Marshele Carter Waddell

I think you'd like MC if you chose to live here. You hear about the crimes the bratty kids do but I have yet to really see it & just like in any place, you have to be cautious. I think some of the people around here just don't use much common sense & don't properly take care of their belongings.

But yea, the only real downside would be rent since they take all BAH. And like navywifeplus3 said, you're close to a lot of stores. We're also right down the road from one of the medical buildings so you don't have to drive very far to bring your kids to the doctor.
