I would fly into Palm springs, there is plenty to do, it's really nice and only 45 mins away from 29 palms.
Yes, people out there LOVE them some AC!!

People really don't put into perspective the whole "moving to twentynine palms" dread.

when you live in the high desert you can lay out in the sun as early as FEB. The UV is already 6-7. Sure, right now it's 105 degrees out and for health reasons you really shouldn't be outside like that without a canteen, but still, there's like 9 other months in the year that you can be outside without heat stroke. (and actually, Joshua tree National Park is 10 degrees cooler than base. so if you ever wanna get away from the heat go into the park.)

They're building a casino, too, right there, BAM close enough to the base to create LOTS AND LOTS OF marriage counseling/divorces.

Yeah, PS (Palm Springs) would be a good place to fly into, (that airport is the shit! it's an outdoor airport, very fancy) but check prices also on flights into Las Vegas. I know i flew into both before, and out of both before, I just can't remember which is cheaper.

OH I also forgot about Knots Soak City down in Palm Springs. there's a certain day that MMs gets in for free.

i LOVED twentynine Palms. I suddenly became a small town girl when I moved there.

Not only are the mountains beautiful, but so is joshua tree national park

, and the Mojave national preserve on the way to las Vegas. (220 mi away from 29 palms)

Twentynine Palms is 48 miles away from the highway that leads to Palm Springs, rancho Mirage, and Palm Desert. From I-10, that highway, it's anywhere from 10-20 minutes to something fun.

The wind Turbines are fascinating, no matter how long you see them, and you can go up the "tram way" that will totally blow your socks off. (google the words "tram way", first result. Palm Springs Tram way.)

(view from ride up the tram)

There's the Living desert which, IMO is as good as the san diego zoo! It's an outdoor wildlife park, the animals are contained and you get to observe the birds, the butterflies, the vegetation, all in their little habitats.

Welp. if all else fails and you're still sore about being in the desert, drive 3 hours to vegas or san diego.

Wcchick, those pictures are beautiful! I just googled Palm Springs Tram Way, and it looks like a blast.

Thanks for being encouraging! DB's original orders were for Pendleton and he was beyond excited. Then they changed them the DAY OF graduation to 29, he was so mad.

I think he's gotten used to it, and he's really starting to like it there. I've never been anywhere near a desert, so I have my concerns! I'm so glad to know that not everyone hates it!

Oh. PS. if you get to know your neighbors out there, you will automatically know like 20% of the base. like right off the bat. its a really close-knit community.. because really.. thats all it is! is Military base!

then there's the 29ers out in town (native people) who are either dirty, or trying to prove that they're not disgusting by working on-base.

I really hope he gets orders after 29 for Miramar or Pend.! it'd be a really easy move. We were there in 29, now in san diego, and our fear is being sent to the east coast next :/

    Thanks for the help everyone!

I just bought my plane ticket to visit him - I leave next Saturday! I'm flying into San Diego. I'd love to go out and see the base, but we'll see.
