Gulfport Mississippi
I was wondering if you guys could give me any information on Gulfport. I know that may be kind of hard to do now since Katrina hit. I'm asking because that is where they are sending Josh for A school to become an EO (Equipment Operator) I was wondering if anybody knew anything about the area or the base. I'm not having any luck even finding out information but it could be because I could be looking in the wrong place.
Thanks, Kristina |

We were stationed at Keesler AFB (twice) -- in Biloxi. I take it your DH will be at the Seabee base. (pre-Katrina) There were a ton of casinos, little souvenir shops... all types of stuff to do. Right now, I understand that the highway that runs along the coast is shut down (we have friends at Keesler still). The Seabee base is medium size, they have a smaller NEX and a commissary. Theres base housing (very nice!), a Navy Lodge, movies, etc. You're not far from Keesler if you need to go to a larger hospital, BX, bowling, etc.
Feel free to ask any questions! I'm not sure what else you want to know. I also have photos if you care to see

I grew up in Mandeville, Louisiana which is about 30 minutes away. I really don't know much about the base. DH is going there in May to do a week taking care of medical. I was going to go with, but when I checked with friends approimately a month ago, they said there is still not even a restaurant or store opened. Much of the debris, etc. still litters the roads.

Don't know if you are still interested. I didn't have much info to offer before but I went down there recently and they have opened many things up on the coast. It's still a ghostland compared to BEFORE but there is progress being made. Is he still down there?

Mike is currently down there, an I'm going down there next week. He really says theres nothing to do since Katrina took almost everything. Can someone give me an idea of things to do both on base and off base? I'm a history buff, and Mike likes fishing-etc. I'll be there for nine days, so even if you have some ideas or one or two it would be a great addition to the 0 activities we have in mind.

you could go to Mobile and see the USS Alabama. I dont know if beauvoir is open in biloxi. OR Walter Anderson's Museum of Art in Ocean Springs. You could drive up to Hattiesburg..or to Vicksburg/Natchez..very historical.
