Is Fort Polk really as bad as it seems..?

My husband just got the worst orders ever. He reports to Fort Polk in November, I guess I will follow in January.

I'm looking at stuff online and reading that you have to drive an hour to go anywhere, there aren't even chain restaurants around, the roads suck and will ruin your car, there are huge snakes and biting lizards, and its basically just a dump. Is this an exaggeration? I feel like I'm going to be suicidal there.

Forgive me if I seem dramatic, I just found out about this about thirty minutes ago and I feel like my world is falling apart. If I must go I will try to make the most of it, I don't like being a negative nancy, but my god. I think I would choose literally anywhere but there.

I don't think it would be ANYONES first choice but it will be what you make it. I think it will be an exciting time for you and your husband to be back together!

I'm sorry, I've heard nothing but horrible things about that base. I'm sure that there are positives, though-- you just have to get off of the base and find them! I went to Maxwell AFB and it was super green and gorgeous with lots of wildlife!

There's good southern food. And friendly folks! And they've got some cool museums in Montgomery-- not sure where you'll be in relation to that. There's a lot of history stuff down there.

But there doesn't appear to be any sort of college there and I'm not putting my life on hold even longer so I can live somewhere I don't even want to be. I was stupid to take a break from school the first time to move to Hawaii, but at least that was Hawaii.

Thanks Kat but its in Louisiana and I already looked into it. There's absolutely nothing close enough for me to commute to.
