This thread is truly an honest innocent question...I have noticed that sometimes when people post threads with pictures in them even if their SO is not deployed but their name is showing on like a name tape or something, that people say something about covering up the names....I am honestly just wondering why it is important to cover up their names if they are home, and not at risk of danger? No rudeness/snippy emotion behind this question at all, I'm just wondering...and the second half of my question, if girls on here have their SO's last name as part of their username, ex. Mrs. Smith, and then they post pictures of their SO, isn't that the same thing? I completely understand keeping the last name out of it if they are deployed and if someone asks me to change my pictures to hide the name, I totally do it but I'm just honestly curious about if this is a rule or if it is just a safety precaution, it will save me a little time when I post pictures too. Thanks in advance for the answer!

It's for PERSEC reasons which is why you can change your SN for free on here if you have a last name in it.

I haven't ever heard of PERSEC, what is that? I've only ever known what OPSEC is, still learning all the rules of the military even after 2 1/2 years some stuff I am learning for the first time very recentlly.

Ive never heard of PERSEC or the fact that it costs to change your screen name.

I am pretty sure you have to have a Jewel membership in order to change your username.

Personal security can be a very important thing, depending on your SO's job...

As far as it costing money to change your name... if it's not a first and last name user name issue, you have to purchase a jewel membership and then request the change.

This is what I was wondering about...Thanks! My DB is national guard so I think that might be why I haven't heard about a lot of these rules with names and security, his job is only one weekend a month so not as much risk for him everyday with his MOS. Thank you!
