I'm kind of in the same situation.

My MIL said now that I'm her daugther I should bring a dish for Thanksgiving and it could be something I'm good at or something they aren't having that my family would normally have. The problem is they are fixing everything my family normally has. lol.

I'm thinking of baking something since I can do that the day before here since we have to travel 5 hours the night before Thanksgiving to be there. So you could always bake a pumpkin pie, cherry cobbler, pumpkin cookies, etc.

I always take deviled eggs when we go somewhere for Thanksgiving. There can never be too many deviled eggs.

I say you make the seafood dish anyway. If no one eats it, theres more for you

    Super Easy and unususal;

    Pumpkin Dip

1 8 oz package cream cheese, softened
    2 cups confectioners' sugar
1 (15 oz) can solid pack pumpkin
    1 tbsp ground cinnamon
    1 tbsp pumpkin pie spice
    1 tsp frozen orange juice

In a medium bowl, blend cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Gradually mix in the pumpkin. Then stir in spices and orange juice until smooth and well blended. Chill until served.

    Dip using ginger snaps!

    OR

    Baked Pineapple

1 (20oz) can unsweetened pineapple chunks
    3 tbsp white sugar
    6 tbsp butter, melted
    3 tbsp all-purpose flour
    5 oz shredded cheddar cheese
25 buttery round crackers, crumbled (ritz)

Drain pineapple, reserve 3 tbsp juice
Combine pineapple, reserved juice, sugar, butter, flour and cheese, mix well. Spoon mixture into a buttered 1 1/2 quart baking dish. Top with crumbled crackers.
Bake @ 350 for 30 minutes or until bubbly.

You know, I moved a ton growing up and in a lot of areas a seafood casserole will be fine. I would just tell her "Well, I am going to bring a casserole. I will decide when it gets closer to Thanksgiving." and make that casserole anyway.
