    Help Housing in San Diego

    Advertisements
I recently got married and my DH is stationed in San Diego. He lives in the La Jolla area where his commute to base is around 30 minutes. I'm still living on the East coast and will be until mid next year. Since he is busy with work he has asked me to do some research on apartments and find some that I like. We want to start touring the apartments on the few weekends that I get to visit him between now and his deployment. He mentioned the Chula Vista, North Park and downtown area? Any places to stay away from? I know internet pictures can be deceiving so I'm looking for suggestions. I do have a small dog that will be coming with me. Any suggestions

We lived in Mission Valley and the area is nice. I was always told to avoid Chula Vista.
May I ask where he works? I'm surprised they assigned him housing 30 minutes away in La Jolla. There should be base housing closer.

I didn't think there was housing up that way.

What base is he stationed at?

    Not off base housing

I have no idea on what the base is called? He's only been there for 2 months but almost one whole month he was gone. I corrected my original post. He rents in La Jolla

No worries! There are like 4 or 5 bases (maybe more) so it helps to know which one he's at (or at least what part of San Diego) so that we can recommend neighborhoods nearby.

Like the other person said, mission beach is a nice area and they have pretty nice/affordable apartments and lots of good shopping/restaurants nearby. Also, if he's stationed on Coronado (which I was) imperial beach is also nice/affordable and close to base.

It's hard to say without knowing what base he's on, but I wouldn't live in Chula Vista regardless. North Park is a wonderful little area with shops and restaurants to walk to, and of course downtown has a lot of everything.

We lived in Mission Valley and its nice since its close to the malls and pretty central to wherever you want to go. We also lived downtown in Little Italy and LOVED it, just absolutely fell in love with the neighborhood. Little Italy is expensive but if you can afford it thats where I would go, I would move back in a heartbeat!
