    Too much money?

    Advertisements
Is spending $100 on groceries for three people too much? I can usually make it stretch about a week and a half to two weeks (so figure about $50/week give or take) by making enough to have a few meals of leftovers. I'm asking because DH thinks it's too much and gripes about it every time I come back from the store. I know my mom used to spend at least $100 every week for just her and my brother. So I figure I can't be doing too bad, but I know there's people out there that live on less. And if you're one of those people, how do you do it?

Also, did I post this in the right area?

Uhm, make him start going grocery shopping. That's pretty damn good. The national average is $300 a person a month, so that's $600 a month for two.

It depends what you're buying, I guess. If you're buying good quality food then I don't think that's too much at all. DH and I usually spent about $150+ each shopping trip, every 2-3 weeks for just the two of us.

I would grab a shit ton of coupons . My roommate and I spend maybe $25 a week on food. BUT we are poor college people so we eat a lot of sandwiches .

I agree...making him go will make him realize what things actually cost. We spend about as much as you...except I think we get by at $100 every other week for the two of us + two cats.

Yeah, my mom and I buy really high quality food so we end up spending around $200 every week and a half to a week.

That sounds perfectly reasonable. You can live on less but it ends up being a lot of ramen or whatever is on sale. You can cut costs by using store brands and looking for coupons to use, but $100 every two weeks isn't crazy at all.

DH used to get on me about it as well until I sent him to the store one day

Honestly, $100 for a week and a half, for 3 people is freakin' amazing.

We spend $150 for 6-7 days worth of food for DH, myself, and DS...and sometimes that's not even enough. It gets hard to shop for 3 people, without buying all crap food, for less than that these days.

Hell, chicken breasts for 1 dinner cost us $8-$9 a pop. So that's $45 for just chicken for 5 days. Fish is even more expensive, as is steak. So...yeah, I think you're doing really well
