if you were on someones phone plan for 2 years and all of a sudden they wanted to to get your own phone plan before your contract is up. do you think it's fair that you pay the cancellation fee (on top of the price of a new phone and plan with a different provider) or the them?

Yes, I do. If you made the commitment to be on someone else's plan, and then decide that you want to switch plans or providers, you should be held accountable for that cost.

If they wanted you off their plan, then they should pay the fee. JMO.

If you want off their plan, they you should pay it.

So you (general ) were on a plan together and they wanted you off their plan? If that's the case, then I believe they should have to pay the cancellation fee.

Depends. If you were on their phone plan but paying your half of it then no you should split it or they should pay the cancellation fee because they want to cancel early.
If you haven't paid at all and they have been paying your half then yes. You should have to pay it.

Why should I have to pay a cancellation fee if my friend wants me off before my contract is up (provided I'm paying the bill on time)?

i wanted to wait until my contract was up but said person wants me off sooner so said person can add her husband (which is totally understandable) but said person's phone plan is full and she can't add anyone else until she removes someone on the plan now.

i pay my part of the bill and always have. it automatically transfers to her account so it's never been late or not paid.
