Military Spouse Preference

I don't know if this is in the right place so move if need be!

I just wanted to open up a dialog about this and get some perspectives on it. My DH PCS'd to where we are now before we got married. We planned our wedding while he was overseas last year. I lived in Texas until after our wedding, I moved here, yadda yadda. But, since I did not PCS here WITH him to begin with, I am not eligible for military spouse preference when applying for jobs on post.

How do you feel about this? Your thoughts, opinions, are you like me? Do you think it makes a big ol' huge difference in having/not having it? Thanks.

It bothered me a lot when we lived in Monterey, but I also understand the logic behind it. For a lot of permanent GS jobs, for permanent status you need to be in that job for 2 years. Now if you marry and move in with your husband after they've pcsed, you may not have the time to get that 2 years in. I dunno we were only in monterey for 8 months and then moved. I was unemployed for those 8 months. I'm ridiculously excited to have spouses preference here and have a job.

it is what it is. It sucks, but in a way we're lucky to have preference at all. Maybe you guys will PCS again soon and you'll be able to take advantage.

I hate it. I was not on my husbands orders so I don't have preference. It took me 5 months to finally get a job on base. I could barely get a job downtown because I don't speak spanish.

Took me 7 months to find work here, and it wasn't on base so now I drive an hour one way to work.

I have a NAF job on base working at the gym. If I had preference then I would be able to get the job I want over at the CDC!

I'm sorry, I feel your pain. I guess it is what it is, I just wanted a good explanation as to why we can't get the preference, we are spouses too.

You were in Monterey? That's where I am now, and the ACS employment lady WAS NOT helpful. Nice enough, but very discouraging. My plan was to sub (since I'm a teacher), and she made it sound like with all the fired teachers, there was no way I'd get any work. When I talked to the school district, they said they had just lost 10 subs because they took permanent teaching positions. So now I'm working on paperwork for subbing and applying for any part-time school district positions they post online, and I'm confident I'll find work either as an aide or as a sub.
