Over the past two years I have been jumping around on what I want to do with my life, careerwise. No matter how many times I have changed it I always come back to sonography. I think being a diagnostic medical sonographer is my true calling. It's something I'm positive I'd be good at and that I would enjoy doing. My only concern are the hours may be slightly erratic. It has the possibility of having to work some weekends and some evening. There are also days that I will be on-call. After considering every option I know that this is what I would be happy doing but that does mean that there may be some nights where I won't be the one tucking Matt into bed or I might have to miss some weekend activities. I always wanted a mon-fri job, pretty much 9-5 but nothing that really interests me is like that and the things that might interest me that have those hours don't pay nearly enough. I don't know what I'm looking for here since I know this is a choice only I can make. I guess any input or "what you would do in this scenario" stories are welcome.

I was going to do this, but the only school that was really "about" it and it only, wasn't even accredited yet. And you have to get excepted into a program...Go for it! I know a girl on here, ashleyd, is in the program in Savannah. Maybe you could PM her and ask how she likes it!

I say go for it! I think working in a job you really enjoy is important...and I think the amount of "crazy" hours you will end up with will only be occasionally. And you may even be lucky enough to find a place that has relatively normal hours or will work with you.

That's weird. When I was doing research on it, it sounded like you would just work at one hospital and the community college where I would be doing the program at is accredited on the CAAHEP website so I'm surprised a school that is only for that wouldn't be.
ETA this is what I found on the bls website so maybe just local travel ![]() "Some sonographers work as contract employees and may travel to several health care facilities in an area. Similarly, some sonographers work with mobile imaging service providers and travel to patients and use mobile diagnostic imaging equipment to provide service in areas that otherwise do not have the access to such services." http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos273.htm |

I think it's awesome that you have a career in mind that you will love. So I say go for it! Even though there may be nights when you aren't with your son, it will be great for him to see you doing a job you enjoy!
