Social movements in the news
To help save myself some time, I'm asking you all to help me find contemporary social movements which are involved in environmentalism, human rights, anti-war, anti-gov't, anti-globalization, and anti-capitalism.
I haven't kept up with the news at all so I don't know what to look for. I just need names of the social movements OR if you can give me a link to articles, even better. I will be eternally grateful. TIA!

The Christian right is a social movement. So is the gay rights movement. Those two would be pretty easy. You could also do the pro choice movement or the pro-life counter-movement. The history of both groups since Roe is very interesting.
I'm assuming this is for a paper? LOL. Uh, as far as the groups you mentioned, most of the anti-war/ environmental groups have settled down since the Obama election and honestly weren't very large to begin with. Maybe not large even enough to call a movement. The closest thing I can think of with regard to an anti-government movement would be the Ron Paul movement. They actually did protest the RNC last year and they are a pretty interesting bunch. You would have to see how long that was going on, though, because they may not have been around long enough to be considered a movement. Are there any specific requirements, and outline on what qualifies as a movement, etc?

Well, since there are all different kinds of social movements, it makes it difficult to define social movements. In class, we came up with:
I have to find articles and write a brief description of the information provided in the article and how it relates to the class discussions.

I would go with the gay rights movement. They just had that huge march on Washington last weekend, it would be easy to find articles about it.
You could also do the tea party stuff, they are starting to attack Republicans now. Namely Olympia Snow and Lindsey Graham. They are doing that rudeness at Town Hall meeting stuff still: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/wash...-are-back.html

There has been a lot of anti-government stuff from the Right lately regarding the Tea Parties (Taxed Enough Already) and the protests that have been going on at political public forums.
Also, the health care reform or aka health insurance reform policy that is being proposed is probably the biggest one right now. |
