A Poll.
My husband has never used his PTSD as a crutch. He's very embarrassed that he has this condition, and would rather the world at large not know about it.
There are, however, millions who proudly display their disability, and who believe the universe should know their issues and emphatically understand them. Which are you/your SO?

I tend to deny it too much sometimes....and sometimes I think its good or important to let some people know your situation.
For instance, I was dealing with rape trauma syndrome for awhile and I needed to get a cervical biopsy....being in a situation where I felt I was being hurt and couldn't do anything about it threw me into a tailspin. I lost it after my appt. It would have helped to let my doctor know my background so that she could have proceeded accordingly and checked in on me or prescribed me medication to relax me during the procedure. Its not always a bad thing to admit that you aren't strong in some areas. In fact, some people would call it a strength to be able to admit your weaknesses and meet them head on. I tend to just stick my head in the sand and pretend everything is perfect till it sneaks up on me. |

My husband actually has a (small) sense of humor when it comes to his disabilities.
One night I told him I wouldn't go out and get ice cream, so he said to me, "I'm a Goddamned Disabled Veteran, and I deserve some Goddamned ice cream!" He would NEEEEVVVERRRR say that in public though. Actually, he doesn't say much in public. He's too busy looking for "Charlie" or some other impending disaster. (I use Vietnam words with him, because he triggers with references to Iraqis/Afghanis/Detainees. )

I cant really vote because I have never had it and my SO has never had it. I do feel, though, that no one should ever be embarrassed or be made to feel embarrassed by someone else if they suffer from any medical condition.
