I'm a little new to this so this is my attempt to get with you ladies in hopes of better understanding and possibly being a better support. My db is a former Marine, just got out in December..but he was hurt in a humm-v explosion a few years ago. He suffered a TBI...was in the hospital for a couple weeks then back out in the action again. He has had a few other near death experiences and developed PTSD from that. He has trouble sleeping, poor concentration and memory. He is getting help though, he recently had an appoinment at the VA for therapy with this..helping him to recall words, etc that he has trouble conjuring up. Before we were together he had a bad drinking problem which seems to have really improved (i/e went to a party where i drank more than he did). I'm concerned about the possibility of him getting hooked on prescription drugs because he has back problems, etc. from that time.
What are some good sources of info about these conditions? or what advice would any of you have?

PTSD Resources I loved:
www.patiencepress.com Recovering from War - Patience Mason On Combat - Dave Grossman Handbook for PTSD - http://www.ptsdhealing.net/ptsd%20book/ptsdIntro.htm A Gift from Within -http://www.giftfromwithin.org/index.html (non profit set up for victims of trauma and their caretaker) Down Range: To Iraq and Back - Bridgt Cantrell and Chuck Dean For you: The Dance of Anger - Harriet Lerner (this is good for learning how to deal with your own anger - his ptsd caused me a lot of anger) You Don't Have to Take it Anymore - Steven Stosny, PhD Alanon - if you go just replace he words alcoholic and alcohol with PTSD - the principles of the program work for loving and living with someone with ptsd. For TBI: I'm sure there are support groups out there for TBI who would be able to give you a good list of resources. Good Luck!!!! And its so beautiful to see you supporting your DB by getting educated. It makes it so much easier to live with! |

Thanks so much for the info I really appreciate everyone's support. I'm in a new relationship...my db is a friend of a friend and we haven't been together that long, but I did know about his injuries before I entered into a relationship. I don't know how his anger is yet because I've not really seen him pissed yet. However I get really irritated when I tell anyone I'm dating an ex Marine that they say **** like "wait till he gets drunk and you piss him off and he beats the **** out of you or kills you" and I'm like WTF? How could you say that to someone?? Kwim? I know that some cases things like that happen, but he is on meds and from what his friends say he is a very laid back person and he's been dealing with this well. Of course I worry about him but I dont feel endangered or anything because he's never shown any aggression with me whatsoever. I really am crazy about this guy and I want to be as educated and prepared as possible in order to help him in any way.

Oh wow OP if someone said something like that to me... I'm sorry you have to hear that crap. I'd just tell them I feel bad for their igornance.
PTSD is complicated. It exhibits in very different ways for everyone. Have I heard of some sufferors who lose their tempers? Yes. But we all loose our tempers sometimes. PTSD does not mean you're a wife beater or anything like that!!! And to imply that is ignorant. Physical violence and PTSD are NOT mutually exclusive. I wish people would understand that. My ex NEVER even raised his voice at me and he certainly NEVER ever touched me in an angry way. I'm sorry you have to hear that crap. Just ignore them. They're idiots. |
