HPV during pregnancy
Hi ladies. I received a call from my midwife this morning and she said that my pap smear results came back abnormal so she tested for HPV and it cam back positive. She wants me to go in and have a colposcopy. This scares me, I have been doing research and have found several things saying that it is safe, but some say it's not safe during pregnancy. I obviously want to know if I have the precancerous strain but I also don't want to risk the colposcopy hurting my baby.
Has anyone had HPV or a colposcopy while pregnant? Thanks and prayers are welcome! |

I think I personally would wait until after the birth... I too have heard both and would rather err on the side of caution.

I'm sure they wouldn't do anything that could affect the baby. I have HPV, just found out recently, but normal pap smears. An adnormal pap smear, not to scare you, detects changes in the cells of walls. Knowing that I wouldn't be able to wait to find out if there was something more serious going on. I had an abnormal pap smear 3 years ago and haven't had any problems since though. That's just my opinion but it's your body do what you feel is safest. Maybe also going in and talking to them about your concerns.

I have hpv and didnt find out until this pregnancy. I did have a colpos. done when I was around 22-23 weeks I think. Not all colpos require a scraping, mine didnt. They just go in and have a better look around with a microscope. They sprayed a little vinegar to highlight anything irregular, but didnt biopsy anything on me. They said they would only biopsy if it was an extreme case. I do have to have another one done at my 6 week post partum check up and she said they might biopsy then. The baby and I are fine. I did let them do the colpos. because I didnt want to have it floating around my mind for the rest of my pregnancy.

I have HPV but found out in 02. During my pregnancy my pap came back normal. I have been told it is normal for a flare up also. I thought I had something going on, but i had a skin tag. I would just sit with the DR and ask for all the options on the colpo. What they would suggest.

If you have a colpo while pregnant, they will do everything possible to avoid a scraping or biopsy. If they look up there and actually see potentially cancerous cells, they will biopsy. That is extremely rare though. I had one done at 20ish weeks. It was a breeze. They use vinegar to clear away any mucous. That part stung a little. Then, they looked. Done. No contractions. No pain afterward. I would do it if I were you. Even if they do have to biopsy, it's because they find something very worrisome, and it would be important that they review you better. If they biopsy, they would put you on bed rest for a week or so most likely. Like I said, VERY VERY rarely do they biopsy. If this is the first you are hearing of this, you definitely won't need a biopsy.

agreeing with others, a colposcopy is just looking. if you are pregnant, they should only do a biopsy if it looks like it is an advanced case. definitely have them take a look, it at least will put your mind at ease for the rest of the pregnancy and they can do another colpo and biopsy at your 6 week check up postpartum.
