Amnio for lung maturity? - Pregnancy

I haven't had one. The biggest problem, that I have heard of, is the fact that baby is taking up so much room it is hard to find a good pocket of fluid. The biggest risk/complication is preterm labor.

Honey, why are you having to have an amnio done so soon? Is something wrong?

They wanted me to do one for me at 36wks (almost 37wks) because of my blood pressure but I refused it since I was almost 38 weeks anyway and if they felt like it was that much of an emergency they would have taken her anyway, I just did the strict bedrest thing. I didn't see the point in causing more problems just to wait a couple days for results and to be 38 weeks by that point anyway. But I have heard it does hurt a lil.

I had one done at 37 weeks. It didn't hurt going in but burned when they pulled the needle out. When I went in for my c-section the next morning I was having mild contractions.

i had my amnio done at like 21wks with my first child so i am sure it is kinda different at the end. i didn't have pain at the place where the needle went in - my pain was in my side (kinda wierd, i know) but it wasn't all that bad really...

They wanted to check for lung maturity in order to move my c section up two days (they would wait until past 38 weeks to do it). I don't think it's needed. The c section is 38w6d right now, it would be 38w4d if moved. Otherwise DH can't be there when we come home (he only gets one day off so we need me to come home on a weekend). Just wanted some other opinions.

I had one done at 37 weeks and it came back that the her lungs were not mature at all. The doc said that they were that of a 30 week baby. I had her 1 week later and she was just fine. It didnt hurt at all and I had no complications at all.

If you don't HAVE to have one, don't. My mom had to have one for me and I kicked the needle, got an infection and after I was delivered was given 6 hours to live. Obviously I beat the odds.. But I will NEVER have one done unless it is absolutely medically necessary.

I know that it's not the "norm" and that doesn't happen to everyone... but that's just my experience.
