Good Luck! It's super lucrative if you learn how to run it right!

To become legal (and so the government doesn't come after you 5 years from now asking for thousands of $$) I would go ahead and get a business license from the county courthouse (it cost me $20 in 2009), a sales tax permit and federal EIN (both free). Both of those will walk you through how to pay your sales tax, state tax and federal tax.

What kind of photography will you be doing? Will it all be in house only?

Make sure you read up on your tax laws for home based businesses. You can claim some of your expenses on your taxes. The one thing that blows is that if you live in govt provided housing, you cannot claim your home office as a write off. If you own or rent your home, you can.

Phone, internet, cable, electricity, equipment, etc....all things you can claim for your home business.

Any kind really. Everything from sporting events, to portraits, to engagement or family pictures. Even Pets! Locations can be pretty much anywhere.
