    Feeding Turtles *IMG added*

We have been caring for a turtle for a short time (long story that I can gladly tell if you're curious but short story is we didn't ask for/want him and do not know if we are keeping him yet). Anyway we want to provide the best we can for him so DH and I have both been reading quite a bit about them. We don't know what kind he is, and we've looked through hundreds of turtle pictures and read about various types. He's definitely aquatic though, and not a tortoise.

So.........he came with dehydrated shrimp to eat, and he likes those. We also got him some turtle sticks that he enjoys. Today I was finally able to pick up some kale for him but I don't know if I should chop it up or give it to him as a leaf. He is pretty much the size of an adult hand (including fingers), I would guess six inches long.

Any tips are welcome since we don't know how long he's staying. Currently his name is Homer, but we also call him Captain hook because one of his front legs is not fully formed (he gets around pretty well though!).

I'll try to go get one!

As a side: I did try to google the chopped versus leaf kale and had no luck.

Does he have a longish tail that's kinda dinosaur-like?

He does have definite nails. He's hard to get close to because he is currently not very friendly right now

Tail! Does he have a tail?
And is that a spot of yellow on his "ear" or is it just the picture?

If he has a long knobby tail, he's a snapping turtle. But I believe you are the proud(?) owner of a Map Turtle, maybe the Mississippi variant.

His tale is not long, it is there but just kind of stumpy. It is yellow, he has it by both ears and a little bit near his mouth. I'll look into these map turtles, thanks!

I would just tear it into smallish pieces, when I watched my brother's turtle.

How long have you had him? We ended up with turtles once (someone abandoned them) I thought they'd be boring lets but they warmed up to us and had quite the little personalities!
