    Dilema

    Advertisements
    Here's the scenario -
Last summer I asked my neighbor to watch my dog for a week. She did, I paid her.
A couple month later, she asked me to watch her dogs for a week. I did, she did not pay me.
I may have to ask her to watch my dog again for a week in a couple months. Do I pay?

Why don't you talk to her about it?

If she didn't pay you then I probably wouldn't. Or I'd get her something little. I dog sit routinely for a few different people, some pay me and some don't. My one neighbor sometimes goes overseas for a month at a time for work and I take his dog then, I get paid when it is long periods like that since I have to buy more food etc. But when it's a week or less he'll drop off a 12 pack of beer with the dog sometimes and the one or two times a year we leave town I send Tank up to his house and hook him up with drinkage.

If she didn't pay you, I would definitely not pay her. Swapping services should be enough.

When you paid her, did you discuss it in advance?

It sounds like neither of you talked about it, right?

I wouldn't pay her, but I'd find a way to hint at that ahead of time, just so she wasn't disappointed if she was expecting the same situation as last time. "Hey, can you watch Buster for me? I know he loves you and you'll do a great job. he and I would be super grateful, and I'll bring you back something cool from PlaceWeAreGoing. And of course I'll leave you an emergency fund so you can buy more food and stuff."

I'd get a $20-30 gift of some kind.

Nope, I wouldn't pay her. If she didn't pay you, I can't imagine she would expect to be paid.

huh. That's a tricky one, I hate when that happens. How close are you with your neighbor? Maybe present it to her as "hey, can you watch my dog for a week? I'll return the favor again when needed!" And maybe then the situation can be understood as a reciprocal service. No one pays anyone, and everyone gets free dog care. That's probably what I would do.
