    With any luck........

    In 21 days these

    will look like these

    with the help of this

Nothing funnier looking than a broody hen doing her best to convince you she is a vicious man-eating creature

Grandma Diane (named after MIL) - decided to go full-on broody. Not the best timing - both due to season and the fact that she's one of my most reliable layers who is now not laying - but after going back and forth over whether to indulge her or break the broodiness, we decided to go ahead and give her a few eggs. If nothing else, it'll be a good practice run for her and, best case scenario we might end up with a new pullet or two out of the bunch (our luck it'll be all cockerels if they make it to hatch ).
I wanted to have her hatch out all Easter Eggers (the blue eggs), but Aeryn and Hazel decided to have the worst timing ever on their decision to suddenly cut back on production. I hadn't anticipated having a broody, so I hadn't been saving any hatching eggs, of course last week they were laying like champs, so all those eggs weren't kept in the best way for use for hatching

I love all your egg updates! You've inspired me to buy local eggs at the co-op

Exciting!! My husband "surprised" me with two pullets from a random end of season sale at the local farm store.

Mine are like 4 weeks old right now and looking kinda ugly lol

Yeah - 4 weeks is definitely that "awkward" stage

So, day 11/12 and she is still a setting fool. While I was checking to be sure that none of the other girls had snuck an egg in (there've been two so far that have shown up in there since I gave her her five - glad I marked the hatching eggs) I went ahead and snatched one of the hatchers and gave it a quick candle and we definitely have development Next Sunday/Monday will be the moment of truth
This weekend will be spent prepping a ground level nest for mama and babies to move into after the hatch and building a ramp from run to coop for the kids to use until they are big enough to make the hop like the big kids.

This is so exciting!!! By giving it a candle, do you mean you can see through the shell to see development? If so, that's really cool. I wish people could do that when growing babies.
