Question Anyone have a pet tortoise?

    Advertisements
I really want a pet tortoise. I can't get one anytime too soon, but I do want to start researching so that I can decide when/if it would be the right pet for us, and so that I know all about how to care for one. Anyone here have a pet tortoise? Any words of wisdom or resources you can pass along?

    TIA!

I had a college professor that had one growing up. The only thing I know is that his name was Hueburt he ran away and they never saw him again, which I find slightly funny just because of the general stereotype that they are slow.

Are you going to keep him indoors? Or outdoors? Or both? I briefly wanted a tortoise as a kid and I remember that they need a lot of heat lamps if you keep them inside.

I've got no experience with tortoises but I had two little turtles at one point and I loved those little guys! So much personality! I named them Joey and chandler

I just laughed SOOO hard omg

I don't know much about tortoises, I only had turtles. But I do know that tortoises like flowers and fruit and are super adorable when they eat them. And you can build sweet homes for them!

I had one growing up. It was a desert tortoise. You definitely want to get a heat lamp for night time. I didn't do much of his maintenance cuz I was young but I can ask my Dad any questions you have. During hibernation, make sure his crate is very secure in the ground. My dad didn't have a bottom to his crate, only four sides deep in the ground and hortoise ended up running away when we thought he was hibernating :/

Ya he pushed opened the screen door and just took off. Every time she tells the story I am like rolling in laughter. He was so pet like it was almost as if he was a dog. They used to take him for walks by putting him in a wagon.

My friend in New Orleans has a pet tortoise. Hers seriously ran off awhile back too. They found him, but he was gone for a good bit.

When we first moved to AZ we rented a room from a lady who had a tortoise in her garden bed. DH found it one day and thought it was trapped, so he let it go. She freaked out saying a vulture had already carried it away and eaten it, but then DH found it in the front yard as they were planning a funeral. She had another one before we arrived, but she said after one hibernation season it never came back up, and she found it's shell in the dirt.

I did feed it fruit a lot, it seemed to like that.
