A Lot of Muddy Paws After Bark Park Celebration

Rain doesn't stop dog owners' efforts to raise money and support for a permanent park.

    Bremerton

Temporary turned into a year Saturday for Bremerton’s only off-leash Bark Park, located in Pendergast Regional Park.

A loyal troupe of dog owners donned rain jackets and raised umbrellas to attend a first anniversary celebration while their dogs got muddied up in the new nature-made ponds.

At the celebration’s peak at about 11 a.m., about 50 dogs romped in the rain around their owners, said Magdalena Gregory, with Friends of the Bremerton Dog Park.

"It definitely shows that there is a need ... for an off-leash dog park," Gregory said.

The Friends group of about 15 area dog lovers has been working with the city’s parks department to find and fund a permanent home for a Bremerton dog park.

The spot at Pendergast was fenced off and opened a year ago as a temporary facility for area dogs and their owners. That area, however, is slated to become an athletic field.

Dog parks have become increasingly popular in the past decade as pets have become more important parts of people’s lives.

    "Dogs are family," Gregory said.

Kitsap County has several official off-leash dog parks including Bandix Dog Park in Olalla, Raab Park Bark Park in Poulsbo, and one at Eagledale Park on Bainbridge Island. An off-leash area at Howe Farm in South Kitsap has been approved by county commissioners.

A dog park provides a safe environment for dogs and owners to exercise and socialize, Gregory said.

Early cost estimates for a permanent Bremerton dog park with a covered area, water feature — a planned one, though dogs Saturday seemed to enjoy Pendergast’s natural ones all the same — and obstacle course were about $80,000.

Friends of the Bremerton Dog Park used Saturday’s event to raise money and enlist members. The group hopes to achieve nonprofit status in the near future.

"We’re just looking for more people to work on a long-term goal," Gregory said.

For more information about the Bark Park, contact the City of Bremerton Parks & Recreation Department at (360) 473-5305.

Pouring rain didn't stop dog owners Amy Sousa, right, and Sue Olson from going Saturday to the first anniversary of Bremerton's temporary off-leash dog park at Pendergast Regional Park. Sousa's dog Bonnie romped through all the puddles, but sat still long enough for a treat.

Sue Olson greets a bounding Bonnie, who went with her owner Amy Sousa (not shown) to the first anniversary celebration of Bremerton's off-leash dog park in Pendergast Regional Park Saturday.
