She wont let me cut her nails.
We've always had problems with this. Her nails are out of control. The last place we went to (back in WI) wouldn't take her again because she almost hung herself on the table. They put her in a noose and she squirmed and screamed so much that she almost fell off the table (there were two people pinning her down). The time before then, it took a football sized player Vet and 3 assistants to pin her down to trim some nails. She's a 40 pound whippet/terrier mutt...she's not a Great Dane. But she's a tough cookie.
I'm at a loss. She NEEDS her nails cut. I tried cutting them a little while ago with these super-sharp, quick and easy nail-cutters and she was shaking sooo bad (absolutely terrified) and when I cut ONE, she lunged at me to bite. I'll take her teeth out before we try at another nail. What can I do? Are there places that sedate before they cut? She seriously is horrified of nail-cutting. But this can't go on. |

Have you tried having someone dremmel (grind/pedi paws) her nails? Is she possessive of her paws or is it just the sound/feeling of her nails being cut?
I'm not saying a pedi paws would work on her, I'm sure her nails are far too thick (really, even chihuahua nails are a pain to do with pedi paws) but it may be easier to do with a nail dremmel. Most groomers won't take a sedated pet unless there is a vet on hand. I would check around with local vet offices and see what they charge for this type of situation and what they could do.

my dog is a bitter for nail trimmings too. My vet will give me sedatives if I ask. Also, I found this one girl who was like the dog whisperer, sometimes it takes the right person. If it is desperate, a muzzle is a solution

I wouldn't suggest pedipaws or anything of the like for longer nails. They can get hot after being used for very long which can harm the animal. Also with pedipaws, you can't see how close you're getting to the cuticle. I would talk to your vet and see if he/she can sedate and do them.

Have you tried a dremmel for pets?
My dog Lola and my dog Bruce are ok not great with it. My dog Charlie has to be sedated. He is violently against his paws being touched. Hates it with a passion. Doing his nails is not fun. He drools snarls nips and whines he absolutely destests it. Not to mention he needs to be held down for it. We've tried everything now we just take him to the vet sedate him and do it there. |

Pedi paws or a dremmel is excellent for dogs with long nails and scared of clippers. You're a lot less likely to quick them with a dremmel (or pedi paws)..... pedi paws doesn't even have enough power to make their nails hot enough to harm them .I'd say try dremmeling or asking your vet to sedate. I have always dremmeled my dogs nails. They are as short as they can possibly get and it's great. No damage to anything in the house from their nails and they lay still for it. It's a lot more comfortable for them than the clippers as well.

Yeah, I would say take him to the vet to be sedated. One of my grooming clients takes Ernest (who is my most favorite dog to groom) to the vet to be sedated and practically hogtied to have his nails trimmed. I've personally only been able to do them twice in the last 8 times I've seen him. He hates it so much he expels all unfortunate bodily functions and stresses him to the point I just can't continue to torture him in good conscience.
ETA: Dremmels and pedi paws are perfect for nails if you KNOW what you're doing. You never keep it to the nail if you don't know where the quick is (black nails) and only take shavings off in quick swipes. Again, you need to know what you're doing.

I think I'm just going to call the Vet and see if they can get her in on Saturday. We've always had a problem with her nails. And since we got rejected from one dog groomer, I'm not comfortable taking her to another in case she bites (which I'm sure she'll try), or tries hanging herself again.
![]() It was horrifying when we went to the groomer. I sat on the side since she said, "It'll only take a minute" and it was a nightmare. She squealed, screamed, nipped, whined... Hopefully a Vet can do it after knocking her down and out while I'm not looking. That pedipaws wouldn't do me any good... I can't get near those paws. ![]() ![]() And yet, my lab just rolls around in-between nail clipping like..."Oh yaaaaaa."
