Huskys anyone?
He wants a husky, and I don't know about them at all, like, are they hyper, need a lot of outside time, are they cat like, do they like to retrieve, are they good with kids and strangers, do they have weird humping habbits
etc...got any advice at all puppy to adult drop it off here!I LOVE big dogs but I don't know much about huskies, I usually just go to a non-kill shelter and find the sweetest poochie I made the mistake of going to a little pet place having a bit of a festival for adopting and finding one that I couldn't get--he was a sweet, wonderful fit "me" dog- because my family already has saved 3 dogs, 2guinea pigs,10koi in the backyard....and my room has 2 gerbils ![]() back to the point:anyone have advice?

Husky's have tons of energy and need a lot of exercise. They are known to be destructive when left alone/bored and can get separation anxiety pretty easy. They also WHINE a lot and are very stubborn.
They can be great dogs, but you need to know what you're doing for them to become great dogs to have around.

I don't have a husky, there are a few ppl on here that do though.
My brother has a husky and from the time I have been around his dog I will say that a Siberian Husky is one of the best dogs I have ever been around. They have raised him to listen to them and he obeys so well. He is very good with kids and he will let them pick him up even though he is Big! Husky's do shed bad! Especially when the loose their coat (I don't know the technical name for it) Husky's are dogs that need lot of exercise and will be unhappy if they are stuck inside alll day long without any activity at all (his is anyway) So they make sure to walk him daily and take him to the park as much as they can. They keep their dog inside, not outside at all esp. when it is hot! We plan on getting one next year! I can't wait! |

I don't know much about huskies, but I do know they need a LOT of exercise and outlets for their energy. They were bred for pulling sleds and running quickly over long distances. They are a working breed, and I imagine like so many other working breeds, need a job and can't be left to their own devices.
When I was growing up my family had a husky mix (husky + German shepherd + ?). She was a great dog, very friendly, LOVED people, and had LOTS of energy. She HAD to be with people though, she couldn't have been left by herself. Where my family lived when we first got her, people could pet her through the fence during the day, and she loved it. When my family moved that was no longer possible and she was miserable. While my family was at work and my sister and I were at school, she'd break out of the yard to go looking for people. She ended up in other people's yards and even in their houses! (by slipping through their pet doors.) When the yard was fixed so she couldn't break out, she started breaking through window screens to get inside the house. Because she was alone for so many hours during the day and so bored, she found very destructive ways to keep herself occupied. |

They are wonderful with kids (despite what you read online) and are super friendly towards people. They need a lot of activity and if you are willing to train them for things like agility courses they will love you forever- setting up something like that in the back yard will save a lot of stuff in your house! They are also VERY intelligent. Ours know when we are out of town without them and get very destructive. It isn't just boredom. I can leave them for a couple hours and come home to no problems but last week when I went out of town my neighbor called 2 hours later to tell me she was locking them out during the day because they had already done a number on the house! I would also highly recommend crate training. It is great for all dogs but dogs that run really need it more. They need that safe haven or they will not come back when they get loose. We have been lucky with Alexei (our male) because he got used to visiting the neighbor when he was very young and just goes there if he gets out. Hmmmm I could go one forever since we have 2 huskies and 3 husky puppies right now but I need to get to bed and this is getting silly. If you would like to know more just PM me! |

They need tons and tons of exercise and attention. A daily walk in the park won't cut it. They need to run. They love to run for miles. Thats what's in their blood.. running, pulling and doing it for the long haul. If you can't give them that then I suggest getting another breed of dog. If they don't get enough exercise and attention they act out. They will get destructive..anything that they can tear up they will. They are known escape artists and can literally dig and chew out of everything so you need to make sure you have a damn good fence or a well trained dog lol. If a husky gets out he can run several miles away before he ever gets tired. Aside from that they are funny, smart, loving, protective, they blow their coat twice a year.. and it lasts for a week or two...just depends. They howl, when mine started howling it scared the **** out of me cause at first it didn't sound like a howl, it sounded like someone was screaming and crying. He kept doing it every night when he finally figured out that he could do it. We lived out in the sticks away from people so it wasn't a problem. That wouldn't fly in base housing for sure though. Also, you can not allow them to become leader of the pack. If they think they are the leader of the pack, you will not be walking that dog, he'll be walking you! He needs to see you as the alpha dog. I had a husky for 5 years. I loved and still love him very much. He was my baby boy. There were times when I wanted to kill him but I'd give anything to have him back now. I miss him so much. he has been missing since June now. When he was about 2 1/2 I had to send him away to an obedience school because my dog had alpha dog syndrome. He thought he ruled the roost and as much as we loved him he had to change or he was going to have to find a new home. He had a great teacher and my husky graduated and was a different dog and it made everything so much easier. As far as owning another husky.. maybe someday when we are settled and aren't moving around so much. I'd love to, but the bottom line is, huskies are very good dogs, sweet, gentle, protective and very beautiful but they can also be your worst night mare if you do not give them what they need and they can become a huge burden for your family real quick.

CRAZY ENERGY. CRAZY SHEDDING! That's the one reason I never want a husky, is the shedding
GSD's are the same but huskies have such THICK fur! They are stubborn dogs too. Currently I live around 4 of them. One howls insanely everyday, I can hear it through the walls One is stubborn as hell, one hyper as hell, and one I only met once ![]() They're cute dogs, you just gotta really know what you're dealing with before you get one.

I'm staying at a friend's house while she is deployed to watch her two huskies.
They are wonderful dogs personality wise. They are GREAT with kids. She took them to extensive puppy training classes when they were young, so they are very well behaved. They never bark or whine like I've heard some huskies do. They are calm and realaxed all of the time. The only reason I WOULD NEVER EVER have a husky is because of the hair. It is RIDICULOUS. I have to vacuum and sweep and dust every day. I can't sit down to eat a meal without getting hair in my food. The hair clumps up and floats around the house, so there is husky hair on the kitchen counter, husky hair on the tv, husky hair on my clean clothes. When I go to get into bed at night, the blanket and pillows are covered in hair (and the dogs don't even get on the bed) I have dogs of my own that shed, but this husky hair is NOT WORTH IT. The clean up needed to maintain a normal household, IMO, is not worth having the dogs.

I have a Husky! =]
I also worked at an animal hospital as a Vet Tech, so I know a bit about them =] First off, THEY ARE HYPER! Mine literally runs around the backyard for hours a day. She plays with toys non-stop and will bury an treats and destroy anything you leave on the floor =p They do have a reputation for destructive behavior as puppies. She BY FAR will shed more than you could possibly imagine. I have to vacuum the house once to twice daily to keep it at bay =\ Also remember, huskies are very climate sensitive, if you live in FL, TX or other warmer states, you'll have to take the proper precautions to make sure they don't overheat. Also, Huskies are breed known for their stubbornness. They are hard to train, but by no mean impossible. Most are very food motivated. But to train the successfully, it will take a lot of persistence and patience. Now if you're looking into big husky, you need to either see it's parents, get a full grown one t a shelter(if you can find one), or take your chances. My Husky's parents were both 60-70lbs... well, my little girl tops out at 40lbs on a fat day =\ haha. But my husky is a lean huskey.(smaller sleek ones) They're Lean Huskies and 'husky' huskies(big fluffy ones) Now, to the absolutely wonderful aspects of Huskies<3 They will be your best friend. My little girl loves to cuddle. She always waits by the front door for me when I leave the house. Although it was a tough training her, she listens better them most dogs I know, never hesitates on a command. Now the general info about Huskies is purely a generalization of the breed. By no means does it stand for every single pup. All huskies have their own wonderful personality. I'd say as long as you're willing to put in the projected effort into it, you would love a husky! Mine is my little pride and joy and I love her more than anything!<3<3<3<3 I hope this somewhat helped. If you have any other questions let me know =] Here's my baby =]

My friend's huskies must be very different from the norm, because the last thing they are is hyper! They are LAZY! They literally sleep ALL day and night. I practically have to drag them outside every day to walk. Weird.
