Doberman's

Me and DF are looking at getting a Doberman puppy at our next duty station. Anyone owned one before? what was house training them like? How easy did you find it to introduce them to other animals, namely cats?

just keep in mind that a lot of housing/apartment complexes have breed restrictions and dobermans are usually on the list so it can make things very difficult when it comes to finding a new place to live.

other than that, i dont know a ton about dobermans, but i have met quite a few and theyre always really sweet

yeah we had that issue here, we'll be specifically looking for an apartment that is pet friendly as we'll aslo be having DF's cat.

We used to have 3 when I was little.. They had to be in the house up here because their coats weren't thick enough to keep them warm in the winter. They hated cats.

I've never owned one but all the ones I've ever been around are really sweet dogs. The breed restriction issue is difficult though. As for introducing to new animals, it depends on the individual dog but is usually easier when they are properly trained from the get-go. Whichever breed you decide, puppy classes would be smart.

A lot of places are "pet friendly" but restrict you from owning certain breeds. I'd almost venture to say most places but I'm not sure if that's true in other areas. It is here.

Most places will let you have pet's, but Dobermans are with German Shepards, Rotweillers and pit bulls (and more) on black lists for a lot of apartments and base housing.

Dobermans are cute as puppies, but have the natural guard dog instinct. They are like any other dog to train and so long as you get a really young puppy, it should be ok with your cat.

I know, that's the case in my apartment now, i meant pet friendly to my pets, which will hopefully be a cat and a doberman

I'd just check your current lease and places in a different area if you plan on moving soon before getting one. A dog is a decade-long (or so) commitment.
