    BETTA OWNERS

    Advertisements
My fish has been really drpressed lately.
And he has been showing signs of illness (ie sitting up on near the surface in a corner of the tank) and now his eyes-- like the irises-- are turning white.

    Any ideas whats going on?
I looked all over at the different diseses, and he doesnt have any of those...

Everytime Yoshi Jr seems depressed or sluggish I add in some Bettafix.. which heals damaged fins and skin and he seems to pick back up after a couple days of a few drops

Sounds like it might be ick.

Check out this page..... scroll down to read about Ick:

    http://www.bettatalk.com/betta_diseases.htm

*ETA: Go to the pet store and ask them for "Copper Safe" (or something with copper sulfate). It worked EXTREMELY well for my betta when he had ick.

Just make sure that you follow the instructions closely, and check the Ph levels once or twice a day while doing the treatment, because it'll screw with the Ph.... which'll cause a whole new set of problems. If the Ph goes screwy, you can buy stuff to either raise it or lower it. (Your best bet is to buy a little kit that has the test solution, Ph Up and Ph Down)

I work at one of the aforementioned stores and this is my advice (also being a betta owner): Ick is going to show by being tiny white filaments clung to the fish's body. Cloudy/white eyes is not a sign of ick. The best thing you can do, is change out all his water completely and make sure to rinse all the gravel and decorations in hot water. (Make sure to cool them down after the hot water rinse)

Whatever type of water conditioner you use (to remove chlorine and chloramine) use more of it than usual. Water conditioner helps with replacing slime coat as well as treating tap water.

Check the temperature of your fish's water. Even though bettas are a very tropical fish (we're talking 80 degree water), if they're used to colder water (which contains more oxygen than warmer) and the water temperature changes, the fish's immune system can become depressed and therefore they become more sluggish.

I would be careful using any type of extra chemicals in your water. Because bettas don't do well in tanks with filtration (the water turbulence is too much for this ditch fish) the chemicals can become too concentrated and can easily become more stressed and die.

Your best bet is to do frequent water changes. Once every 2-3 days. And it also depends on how much your feeding him. About three pellets every 3 days will be just fine for him.

Another thing I've forgotten to ask: what kind of set-up is he in? Does he have enough room to visit the top of the tank for frequent breaths? Bettas have an organ called the Labrynth that enables them to breathe oxygen directly from the surface (and this is their main way of breathing actually). If you have a live plant on the top of his bowl, it can prevent him from getting the O2 he needs.

Hope this helps and if you have any questions, PM me!

That doesn't sound like Ick to me. Ick isn't in the eye, and if it got in the eye it wouldn't just stay there. Ick is white dots all over the body.

Can you take a picture of your fish?
