How to exercise a hurt puppy?

    Advertisements
Scarlet had some surgery this week. We got her fixed and they removed her dew claws because they weren't attached. I didn't realize how long the recovery would be for her dew claws. She's miserable. She's on pain killers, so it's not that... I can just tell she's bored and wants to play. I don't know what to do with her. We've been playing a lame version of fetch, but it's not enough.

We finally found a good exercise routine, doing hour walks and an hour at the dog park. She's not allowed to go to the park for three weeks, and she can't go for a walk until tomorrow.. even then I'm sure they'll need to be shorter. Anyone have tips? She's such an active puppy, how should I keep her from getting stir crazy and bored?

On a side note. Her bandages look like leg warmers and it cute!

Get some toys that require her to work for a reward. This will keep her occupied and keep her mind exercised even though she can't get much physical activity right now.

Try going for the shorter walks and let her rest alot in between, if you have a backyard, just let her go out there and meander around for a bit

Well..unless the vet said you could, you don't exercise a puppy that just had surgery. With a spay alone you are not supposed to do much exercise for at least 10-14 days you could pop a suture or herniate. With the dew claws added, your looking at making sure she is really not active for awhile. If she is in pain, she may not want to "play" anyway. Give her chew toys etc. Let her walk around the back yard, super short walks around the block.

Thats GREAT you figured out a good exercise routine! I bet she is soooo happy.

I would call the vet and check in with them and see what they say. When the water warms and she heals I bet she would love to swim.

I would do marrow bones(see the rawhide thread I posted a link with Pic) in the mean time with frozen something in the middle.

Well, I have an idea of how you can get her out of the house. I do this for my rabbit because I can't 'walk' them really. I bought a cool Pet Stroller . they are for pets of all sizes, its basically a flat stroller with a mesh type cover on top so they won't jump out. I take my rabbits out for a walk on nice sunny days so they can see different scenery. That might be an idea to stimulate her brain a little . I got mine on Ebay pretty cheap for like $40, but you probably need one a lot sooner than that, so they do sell them at petstores and such, but you're looking at around $100 that way.

They make puzzle toys where the dog has to figure out how to get the treat out. Kept my little man busy for days when he had his manhood removed. I'll google to find the actual name of the toy..

I found a website with a few different options for you:
    http://www.dogplay.com/Behavior/toys.html

    Good luck!
