    Crate Training???

    Advertisements
We're PCSing in July/August time frame. After much bitching at the hubby he's decided we're keeping our dogs and they're coming with us. My question is this. Since we're in Hawaii and are moving to Mississippi, it's obvious we're flying and that the dogs are gonna have to be crated and flown also. How do we go about crate training?? When is a good time to start?? Is it better to start now, and slowly work them into it or what?

    Thanks ya'll

I'm no expert but I think it's definitely a good idea to start now. It took our dog MONTHS to be able to crate on command and feel comfortable in it.

Start now. Have you looked into the regulations to move pets to Hawaii? They're pretty strict and have to be kenneled for a quite while unless you follow a strict schedule with the vet! Look into it now so your babies don't have to be kenneled for too long.

We're actually moving from Hawaii to Mississippi. The only regulation I've heard of about that is they won't allow the dog to fly if it's over 85*.

The trick is to beat them hard and long enough (preferably with a leather belt) so that they would rather be in the crate than out of it when in the house.

(completely kidding, a nylon belt works just as well...)

seriously though...start now! the sooner you start the better they will be and more comfortable in their crates! you are just crate training right? not potty training as well? what I do is lots of repetitions of the command after I've shown the dog what I'm asking it...you can use the command kennel, cage, crate whatever you like...don't be surprised if they don't go in the first try and if that doesn't work you can get a leash place it on the dog and put the dog in the crate with the door open saying the command and treat the dog when it gets in the kennel then take the dog out and praise then repeat the steps! you have any questions PM me!

start out in like 5 min increments with just leaving out the front door.
NEVER associate it with being bad. It's their safe place and they should love being in there.
I'd also leave a KONG in there.

Start asap. We started crate training ours when we first bought him home as a puppy. It took him a while to get used to it, but now we just need to make a certain face and he'll trot over into his crate!! Good luck
